Opportunity: Housmans Volunteer

Commitment:
Regular volunteering
Opportunity description:

We are looking for volunteers for an exciting and creative project uncovering the history of one of the UKs leading radical bookshops and centres: Housmans in Kings Cross. 60 years ago, in 1959, Housmans was opened on Caledonian Road, Kings Cross. In the years since it opened the building has been at the centre of grassroots politics in the UK – from the movement to end nuclear weapons, to the Gay Liberation Front and first helpline for LGBT+ people, early environmental groups like London Greenpeace, support for the miners’ strike and campaigns against austerity.

From June 2020 we will have volunteer opportunities for people aged 18 – 25 to record the history of Housmans using oral history, archives and photography and (once face-to-face contact can resume) we will create an exciting site-specific theatre piece, to be performed in Housmans.

From June 2020 we will be meeting regularly online, exploring the history of the building together, have training in oral history and hold virtual discussions with people involved in the historical movements connected to Housmans and Peace House while the coronavirus shutdown is in place.
