Discover Project Active Capoeira
What to expect at Project Active Capoeira:
Capoeira is a unique Afro-Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Practised in a circle called a roda, Capoeira is played as a physical dialogue between two people, guided by live music, rhythm, and call-and-response singing. It develops strength, agility, coordination, creativity, and cultural awareness, making it both a physical practice and a powerful form of expression.
History & Cultural Background:
Capoeira was developed in Brazil by enslaved Africans as a form of resistance, self-defence, and cultural survival. Disguised as a dance to avoid punishment, it became a symbol of resilience, freedom, and community. Over time, Capoeira evolved into a respected cultural practice, deeply connected to Brazilian history, philosophy, and identity.
Today, Capoeira is practised worldwide and is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, celebrated not only for its athletic elements but also for its emphasis on respect, inclusion, music, and shared learning.
