What is a Union Executive Meeting?
As a Union, we are led by students, and that means you have the power to make decisions. This all happens through Union Executive, a forum for students to come together, discuss ideas, and shape policies across UCL. Our fourth Union Executive took place on Monday 3 February, where elected student representatives discussed ideas and ratified policy proposals from the Policy Zones.
Goksu Danaci, President, is the Chair of Union Executive. If you would like to ask the Goksu a question at an upcoming Union Executive, or if you would like to arrange a time to meet with her, please complete this form here.
Below is an overview of what was discussed at the meeting, the fourth out of the seven that take place each academic year.
Outcomes of the Union Executive Meeting
Leadership race
President Goksu Danaci highlighted that nominations for the Leadership Race are now open. Goksu explained that this is an excellent opportunity for students to get involved in shaping their Union.
Want to help shape and approve policy proposals? You can now nominate yourself for the 2025 Leadership Race and take the first step toward leadership. This is your moment to decide who will represent and lead your club, society and Students’ Union, playing a pivotal role in policy-making and pushing for important change.
International Student Survey
Goksu also promoted the International Student Survey, undertaken by the Union on behalf of the Russell Group Students’ Union and in partnership with the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) to better understand the international student experience.
Want to help improve the international student experience? As part of our work with the Russell Group Students' Unions (RGSU) and UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA), we are conducting research into the international student experience. Your response will help us push for meaningful change within UCL and nationally.
Sabbatical Officer Reports
All six Sabbatical Officers were present in the meeting and gave a brief overview of their priorities and what they have been working on in January 2025. Their full monthly reports can be viewed on each of their individual webpages. Have a look to see what they have been up to on their profile page.
Items for Discussion
Following the Welfare & Community and Activities Zone meetings over the past fortnight, two items for discussion were generated and brought to Union Executive. These were:
- The Union should create a Commuter’s Officer role
Societies Rep (Non-Portfolio), Adam Cleary proposed an idea to introduce a Commuter’s Officer role. This was a particularly pertinent issue as approximately a quarter of students at UCL are commuters. The Sabbatical Officers will work with Adam to outline a range of options at the next possible Union Executive meeting.
2. Change to the structure of the Sports Rep System
Sports Officer, Jack Sibeon also proposed an idea to move the election of the Sports Reps from the October Rep Elections to the March Leadership Race. The Sabbatical Officers will work with Jack to outline a range of options at the next possible Union Executive meeting.
