Candidates

Chris Kiddey

I have been an enthusiastic member of UCL Diplomacy Society for the last two years, and would love to take the opportunity to make the society a larger part of my life. I have been to talks, balls and embassies which have expanded my mind and created lasting memories. I want to continue this for society members in 2024/2025.

This year, I've been in two committees and held both treasurer and social secretary roles. I therefore have significant experience working in committees and planning events. I ran a marathon, lived in 5 cities and did a skydive this summer, meaning I have boundless energy to give to the committee. Living between 5 cities has also given me a degree of cultural sensitivity, allowing me to provide meaningful events for the society.

In my role, I would double down on the second pillar of UCL diplomacy society, of academia and political discussion. I would like to promote discourse and critical thought about the increasingly frayed, complex and changing world of international relations, with even more debates and topical speeches by high profile individuals.   This topicality could make the society an even more exciting place to be a member of next year.

However, what is more important to mention is how fantastic the society currently is. There is far less to change than to continue doing. I hope to bring experience, energy and topicality to the committee of UCL diplomacy. To make society members the most worldly, stimulated and critical students in UCL.

Cici Chen

I am standing for head of events at the Diplomacy Society because I have a strong passion for organising events and creating meaningful connections within the realm of international relations. Having attended various events hosted by the Diplomacy Society, including the diplomatic breakfasts, the journalism conference and some embassy visits, I have been amazed by the power of diplomacy and am inspired to get more involved to make a difference.

My previous role as liaison officer in the Chinese society equipped me with valuable skills in event coordination, where I successfully organised events such as the League of Legends competition and Lantern food festival. Additionally, during my internship at a think tank, I delved deep into researching about international relations and assisted in setting up academic conferences and panels. These experiences have provided me with the skills necessary to handle the hustle of event planning and networking effectively.

Looking ahead, I'm eager to organise even more exciting events for the society. I would love to arrange embassy visits to Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian countries, opening up new avenues for cultural exchange and networking. By expanding our event offerings, I believe we can further enrich the experiences of our members and strengthen our professional networks, paving the way for even greater opportunities in the future.

Alisa Kerzhapkina

I believe I am a candidate fit for this role because I:

  • am responsible, adaptable, and attentive;
  • grew up constantly travelling and moving countries, perfecting my cross-cultural communication skills;
  • have a strong sense of leadership and love planning.

The diplomacy society is one of the biggest, most active societies in UCL: it would be an honour for me to work alongside other committee members as a Head of Events; further improving the society and helping it grow by organising more embassy visits, frequent socials, and more.

Although challenging, I view this role as rewarding: I enjoy trying out new things, and to me, becoming Head of Events would be interesting.

By voting for me, you vote for more entertaining and insightful activities; as well as a responsible (and fun) new member of the committee!

Joseph Wood

I am applying for this position as I have been covering the role for the past few weeks prior to election and have met with the existing events team and the society’s President to discuss ideas. I have already organised for a prolific diplomat to speak for Diplomacy Society and Geographical Society (of which I am Events Director) as a collaboration. I am keen to participate in the Summit, as I attended last year and found this to be an insightful series of discussions.

As a Geography student, I have a slightly different perspective of diplomacy and find it interesting to explore diplomatic issues through a holistic, geographical approach. Having studied political modules and having an interest in international relations and foreign affairs, I have enjoyed being an interim member of the society.

I am organised and take a proactive approach to event organisation, as I have experience planning large social and academic events for Geographical Society. I am keen to put my interpersonal, management and team coordination skills to use in the role, and enhance them in future experiences within the role.

Marilyn Mak

Hi everyone! My name is Marilyn.

I enjoyed and gained a lot from participating in diplomacy events, listening to professional insights of global politics, ranging from Speaker Event at the Embassy of Japan to discussions with the German Ambassador. I am eager to be a part of the committee in managing events, creating useful and engaging learning opportunities to our society members.

My communication, organizing, and problem-solving skills are put into practice by being an Academic Representative on UCL’s foundation course, which would be essential in coordinating equally awesome diplomacy events as the ones I have attended.

As the head of event, I will coordinate a variety of events and make efforts to accommodate different interests, also to ensure plenty of networking opportunities in events held.

Besides increasing our understanding of diplomacy by attending talks from guest speakers and workshops, I propose hosting a wider variety of educational events extending from diplomacy, such as visiting political art museums. This gives us an alternative from usual settings, providing a different perspective beyond traditional academic approaches of viewing the outcomes of diplomacy.

Thank you.

Polly Rozman

I am a first-year European Social and Political Studies student, and would love to be the Head of Events in the Diplomacy society.

Having been a member of the society this year, I have really enjoyed all the inspiring and useful events. This makes me even more excited to join the committee and organise more events.

Having had previous experience in event organising, as: Head of House, Senior prefect, International ambassador, and Sixth Form representative, I have been able to improve my organisational skills, communication, and working effectively in a team.

I am really passionate about international relations, diplomacy being a vital part of this. As the Head of Events, I will try my best to organise useful workshops, talks, and socials, to support students in their understanding of prospective careers in diplomacy, as well as developing their knowledge of international affairs, and improving connections.

I hope to become a part of the committee and work in a lovely team in the new year!

Carolina De La Rosa

I am standing because I would like to run for the Head of Events position in the Diplomacy Society.

One of the reasons that I see myself as being a good candidate for this position because of the previous expereience that I have with being on society committees and in commitees in general.

This year, not only was I Welfare Officer of the IR Society, but I also did this role simutaneosly while being President of BBI (the Bentham Brooks Instititue), UCL's student-led think tank and research programme (in which the Diplomacy and IR Society are also alliance societies with BBI), as well as continuing my role of being student rep for Dissabilities and Neurodivergencies in the EDI commitee within the Anthropology Department.

Because of these previous experiences, I have a good understanding of how societies work at UCL, the SU rules and regulations related to societies, as well as how to work in a team, be a good player, and awareness and how to handle disagreements or arguments on issues.

As Head of Events I will help organize events and collaborations for the Diplomacy Society. If I get elected for my continuing positions within IR and BBI, I will make sure to make the events organized within these societies, also collabs with Diplomacy Society top open more spaces for DipSoc members.

Futhermore of the experience that I have had working for the U.S. House of Representatives for two summers now, I will make sure to organize events with people who currenrly work in Congress.

Matthieu Dinh

Hi everyone! I’m Matthieu, a 2nd year PIR student.

I strongly believe I would be a good fit for the Heads of Events role as I’ve had past experience in organisational roles. From school to online communities, I have been adept at coordinating events, reaching out to guest speakers and at communication among all parties involved.

I am currently a writer for Dip Soc’s various written media formats such as the termly journal, newly-launched newspaper and monthly online articles. Through the numerous articles written by my peers, I’m of the opinion that we as a society should be proud of the diversity and breadth of topics that our members are familiar with and interested in and expand the variety of events accordingly both in terms of format and content.

Furthermore, I would like to work to better integrate the society’s written format such as the aforementioned monthly newspaper more strongly into the heart of the society. It has great potential to reach prospective members across campus by promoting our rich and exciting events. It could also offer the unique opportunity of building on from the events themselves with coverage of the events themselves, further interviews and analysis & opinion pieces. In short, a Dip Soc event itself should only be the starting point: the foundation from which opinion, debate, discussion and analysis – which form part of our society’s DNA – is spurred.

#VoteMatthieu for a compelling and thought-provoking Diplomacy Society Events experience!

Constance De Metz Noblat

We are all here for one reason: to learn. Our shared curiosity for diplomacy makes us eager to discover, understand and appreciate the complexities of international affairs. There is no better place at university to stimulate this critical thinking than in a  society with a calendar filled with diverse and thought-provoking activities. My deep-seated commitment to the principles of diplomacy and global cooperation fuels my desire to create events that not only educate but also inspire and empower our members. Although, I know that diplomacy will be a significant part of my future career, I am not entirely sure which track I want to take yet; that is why I’m so dedicated to discover and meet the broadest range of diplomatic paths and speakers. My vision is to curate events that bridge theoretical knowledge with practical insights, connecting students with diplomats, academics, and professionals in the field. Workshops, simulations, guest lectures and Embassy visits are primary formats through which we will explore the multifaceted world of diplomacy. I am also extremely committed to designing events that reflect the diverse interests of our members. I believe that an environment where every member feels valued, heard, and included is a priority if we are aiming to foster engagement within our community. As a tight-knit community, whether as international students or otherwise immersed in British culture, what better way to also enjoy ourselves than by arranging pub nights?

Ananda Chio Thomas

My passion towards diplomacy, coupled with my participation in the society this year fuels my desire to contribute to the society collective goals. I envision organising events that not only inform but instill a sense of purpose and motivation among members, fostering a network of like-minded individuals committed to improving our world.I share the collective enthusiasm for diplomacy, which I would like to share with new and existing member upcoming academic year to elevate the society's impact and influence, transforming our shared dedication into meaningful interactions that can contribute positively in the world we strive to improve.

Juan Diego Chuquihuara Salas

My name is Juan Diego Chuquihuara Salas, and I am currently a first-year student in Politics and International Relations.

Having been deeply interested in diplomacy from a young age, my passion for the field has only grown stronger through my experiences, notably during my period working at the United Nations in Geneva in 2023. I specifically worked on improving the agenda of the 2024 Global Forum for National Trade Facilitation Committees. My contribution played a supportive role in facilitating the smooth operation of the forum, ensuring that discussions among policymakers and National Trade Facilitation Committees are relevant to the current challenges of international trade. However, this experience at the UN not only improved my organisational skills but also helped me develop a network of diplomats, establishing a close connection with a Chief of Capacity Building for example, that could be mobilised to enrich our society's impact.

I have also been engaged in the Peruvian Embassy's global activities, such as the time I helped organise the national day gathering for the Peruvian community in Bern, for example. Furthermore, my involvement has extended to building close ties with Peruvian diplomats, including the vice consul, consul and embassy officials in London.

My decision to stand as the head of events stems from a sincere desire to utilise my network, organisational skills, and experiences to organise meaningful events for our society.

Ben Rettinger

Hi! I’m Ben and I’m running for Head of Events of Diplomacy Society. I’m currently finishing my first year of European & International Social & Political Studies and specializing in International Relations, so very interested to get to know the world of diplomacy better.

I’ve had a great time in Diplomacy Society so far and am very keen to get more involved. As Head of Events, you can expect me to help organize more embassy visits, talks, conferences, socials and more. I reckon that my organizational skills and experience on the committees of other societies will ensure Diplomacy Society events run smoothly and effectively.

Diplomacy Society members are what make the society great, so I’m eager to hear any event ideas, suggestions and concerns you might have.

Thank you for your vote, I’m very excited to work closely with you all!

Katie Julianna Taylor

Hi everyone !

My name is Katie Taylor and I am running for the position of an Events Officer for Diplomacy Society. This past year I have been amazed with the plethora of wide ranging events Diplomacy Society has had to offer from embassy visits to inspiring talks from outstanding guest speakers. Diplomacy Society at UCL has given the student body incredible opportunities and has pioneered discussions and debate on the most pressing diplomatic crises we have seen unfold in the past year.

Therefore I would like to be an events officer as I would very much like to give back to the Diplomacy Society by continuing its legacy as one of the most prestigious societies at UCL. I shall do this by further developing our societies ties with the many embassies that we have been so lucky to visit and by creating new connections. As I specialise in the Eastern European region, I believe that I can offer a unique insight into the area and I will be able to increase Diplomacy Society's ties with the region. I have also gained a lot of experience in organising similar events centred around guest speakers and diplomatic debate whilst head of both my school’s Politics Society and History Society. Therefore as your events officer I can guarantee that you are in capable hands. I can promise that there will be even more interesting embassy visits, talks from some of the most inspiring diplomats of our generation, and of course a ball just as banging as this year’s.

Thank you so much !!! <3

Kata Mesterhazy

I am Kata Mesterházy, and I am standing for the heads of events position, because as a Politics and International Relation student, I am passionate about diplomacy and global dialogue. Nonetheless, my previous experiences in the European Parliament and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly have inspired me to further develop my skills and pursue a diplomatic career.

Therefore, as head of events, I can promise:

  1. More focus on current events, I will focus more on the current diplomatic affairs like Russia and Ukraine through speakers, charity organizations.
  2. High profile guests thanks to already established connections I will provide a variety of accomplished individuals working in international politics and diplomacy.
  3. Building an inclusive, diverse community, through fun socials, seeking to build a strong community of all the diplomacy enthusiasts.

I am looking forward to working with the society!
