Welcome to SSEES!
We are proud to collaborate with the Czech Centre London, Sekyra Foundation, Made in Prague Festival, and UCL's Places, Identities & Memories (PIMS) Research Centre to present this discussion panel on Václav Havel! 🗣️
Havel was a political dissident in communist Czechoslovakia who then became the last president of the aforementioned nation. After the Velvet Divorce, he became the first president of the nascent Czech Republic. 🇨🇿
As part of the Václav Havel Dialogues series, the panel will discuss Havel's philosophical and political thought as well as how he is remembered and contested in Central and Eastern Europe today. 📖
Members of the panel will include Dr. Iryna Odrekhivska (UCL SSEES), Dr. Josefina Formanová (Charles University), Dr. Andrzej Sadecki (Centre for Eastern Studies), and Tereza Šídlová (Czech Centre London). 🏫
The panel, chaired by Dr. Jessie Barton Hronešová (UCL SSEES), will analyse what Havel's thinking can offer us today, at a time of ‘polycrisis’, lack of moral anchors, polarization, and renewed pressure on civil society across Europe. 🤔
This event is open to all members of the UCL community and is guaranteed to be an evening filled with intense and intellectual discussions about the legacies of arguably one of Europe's most important statesmen! 🌍
