To kick off our events for the year, we will be visiting one of London's most historic treasures! On October 6th, we will be heading to The George Inn for an evening of relaxed drinks and great conversation. Exploring unique, heritage-rich venues like this aligns directly with one of our society's core founding aims.
Whether you're looking to reconnect with old friends or meet new ones, join us to socialise and network. Committee members will be present throughout the event to welcome everyone, manage attendees, and ensure everything runs smoothly. Please note that seating will be reserved for those with tickets.
About the Venue
Established in the medieval period on Borough High Street in Southwark, The George Inn (originally known as the George and Dragon) is owned and leased by the National Trust and stands just 250 metres from the south side of the River Thames near London Bridge. It holds a unique place in British heritage as London’s only surviving galleried coaching inn.
A pub has existed on this site since medieval times. After being rebuilt following a major Southwark fire in 1677, this venue stood next door to Chaucer's famous Tabard Inn from The Canterbury Tales. It is also believed to have hosted Elizabethan inn-yard theatrical productions.
Charles Dickens frequented the pub's Middle Bar (then the Coffee Room) and went on to feature The George in both Little Dorrit and Our Mutual Friend.
