Details of Sexual Violence Exhibition:

This exhibition investigates the use of sexual violence in conflict, how and why it’s used, who it affects and how victims and survivors seek justice and reconciliation. Sexual violence is a common consequence of conflict. The violent and chaotic environment war creates has allowed it to occur throughout history. It has far-reaching consequences for victims and survivors, inflicting trauma, fracturing families and often forcing people from their homes and communities. Women and girls are disproportionately affected due to gender inequalities, however men, boys and members of the LGBTQIA communities are also impacted. Although sexual violence in conflict still occurs, it is no longer seen as an inevitable by-product of conflict. It constitutes a crime that is not only preventable, but punishable under International Law. The case studies presented here span the First World War to the present day. They reveal how and why sexual violence occurs in conflict. These examples are balanced with stories of survival and reconciliation.
