Join the World History Society for our first speaker of the year: the amazing Dr Jon Chandler

As the 250th anniversary of 1776 approaches, the American Revolution is once again being framed as the birth of a nation and a milestone in the history of liberty. But in 1776 Britain was the most powerful empire in the world, fresh from victory in a global war. Why did revolution succeed in mainland North America, but not in Jamaica, Canada, or India? And why did the British Empire expand after 1783 rather than collapse? This talk repositions the American Revolution within the wider geopolitics of the eighteenth century, arguing that it was not simply a colonial rebellion, but a crisis within a global imperial system whose consequences reshaped empire rather than ended it.
