Master's student Fardeen explains why Varsity is such a special event in the UCL calendar
Varsity is always one of the biggest highlights of the UCL calendar, but this year feels different. There’s a real sense that Varsity 2026 is not just about competition, it’s about legacy, pride, and celebrating what it means to be part of UCL at a historic moment.
This year marks UCL’s 200th anniversary, and that alone gives Varsity extra weight. For two centuries, UCL has stood for ambition, progress, and challenging the status quo. Seeing that spirit play out on the pitch, court, and track feels especially meaningful. Varsity becomes more than just a series of matches; it is a celebration of 200 years of students pushing themselves, supporting each other, and representing UCL with pride.

What makes Varsity so special is how it brings the entire university community together. Whether you are competing, cheering from the side lines, or following the scores online, there is a shared energy that cuts across courses, year groups, and backgrounds. It is one of the few moments in the year when UCL truly feels like one united team.

There are a few fixtures I am particularly excited about this year. The headline team sports always bring intensity and atmosphere; matches like football, rugby, basketball, and badminton are guaranteed to be fiercely contested and packed with drama. These games are often decided by fine margins, and the crowd support can genuinely change the momentum. There is nothing quite like seeing a last-minute goal or a comeback win while surrounded by fellow UCL students.
I am also really looking forward to the individual and less talked-about sports. Varsity is a chance for sports that do not always get the spotlight to shine on a big stage, and that feels especially important during UCL200. Every athlete competing is contributing to the wider story of UCL sport, and that deserves recognition just as much as the major fixtures.
Beyond the results, Varsity represents something deeper. It is about commitment, early mornings, late training sessions, balancing sport with studies, and representing UCL with integrity and passion. In a year that celebrates our history, Varsity also reminds us that we’re actively shaping UCL’s future.

That’s why I am excited. Varsity 2026 is not just another event in the calendar. It is a moment to look back at 200 years of excellence, while cheering on the students who are carrying that legacy forward. Win or lose, being part of that atmosphere is something I will remember long after the final whistle.
