About us
At UCL Women's Rugby, we’re all about having fun playing a sport we love. As a growing family of all backgrounds, shapes and sizes, there's room for everyone - whether you've never touched a rugby ball in your life or you're a seasoned professional! With regular training, socials, matches and volunteering opportunities, we pride ourselves in supporting every member through their uni journey.
We typically play in the BUCS leagues on Wednesday afternoons, which the university reserves as free time for sports and activities. For those with other commitments or who want to get more game time, we also play in the more relaxed London Universities league (LUSL) on Sundays - these are a great chance for players new to rugby to get as much practice as they can. Our season culminates with the Varsity match against K*ngs.
Not sure what rugby actually is? Here's a short video that covers some of the basics.

Who can join?
ANYONE!! (who is a student of UCL..)
We cater to all levels, from those who have been playing for years to those who have never even seen a rugby ball. The beauty of rugby is there is a position for everyone, so don’t worry if you don’t think you’re the ‘right shape’ for rugby! If you’ve not heard of rugby or want to get more of a feel of what women’s rugby is like at UCL then check out our social media - we like to keep our fans updated (especially via Instagram and TikTok) and we’ve got plenty of match and training content up there to help you get a feel of things.
As a club, we are actively striving to create a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone irrespective of race, religion, and sexual orientation. We work hard for each other on the pitch and look after each other off it. So, if you are looking for a new challenge, want to get fitter and stronger, or just want to make some new friends, then come and check us out!
Memberships
We’ve adapted our membership this year so everyone interested in women's rugby can get involved - no matter if you want to play or not!
- Our FULL Year Membership gives you access to weekly training sessions, socials & matches! Basically, everything.
- Our HALF Year Membership gives you access to the above, but only for either term 1 or term 2. Please let us know in advance which term you'd prefer!
- Our SOCIAL Membership gives you access to all social events, strength and conditioning activities and rugby viewings/ classroom sessions.
Note: Full/half-year membership prices include insurance, subsidised facility hire, equipment usage, coaching, travel to away BUCS matches, referees for games, kit, and more. In order to join us in any in-person training or matches, you will NEED to have already purchased either a full or half-year membership.
What this year will look like
On the pitch
All full/half members have access to our weekly training sessions in Wood Green with our Coach, as well as the opportunity to play in matches on Wednesdays (BUCS league) and on Sundays (LUSL).
And off the pitch
We have the classic Wednesday night socials in the Union along with the other sports clubs, as well as other events throughout the term. Drinking is completely optional, snacks are encouraged and it’s a nice way to get to know each other off the pitch and in the dry.
We also have fundraising and volunteering opportunities for those who want to give back and expand their uni experience!
To keep an eye on our players' overall welfare, we have a wide range of practices in place to ensure that everyone receives the help and support they may need. Our dedicated and Union-trained Welfare Officer Emily will be on hand throughout the year, running various welfare activities and making sure we are all the healthiest and happiest versions of ourselves.
A Typical Week
Our training sessions take place on a Monday 18:00-20:00 at New River Sports in Wood Green. Even if your lectures finish at 18:00, we'd still love for you to come along to the second half of the session! We have BUCS fixtures for Wednesdays and LUSL games on Sundays.
This year there will also be the chance to work on your fitness with regular player-led sessions ranging from running to yoga to strength training. Our fab social sec Maria is a fitness influencer and running guru, so head to her for any S&C top tips!
Our socials will include weekly student nights on a Wednesday, coffee meet and study sessions for anyone who wants a library buddy, and our traditional dinners and awards nights. We also have a range of volunteering and fundraising events in the works - so there's something for everyone!
