What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is widely accepted as the most effective stand alone martial art (watch UFC 1 if you don't believe us), where smaller, weaker individuals can overcome larger opponents with well applied technique and leverage. It focuses on taking the fight to the ground, advancing to dominant positions, and using chokes or joint locks to submit your partner, and finish the match. BJJ is not only a great workout, but also an engaging way to apply problem-solving skills in a physical setting, whether training for competition or self-defence. At UCLBJJ, we prioritise pressure testing the techniques we learn, through sparring, to ensure the skills you develop are effective against live resistance. Don't be intimidated however; safety is of top priority, and our experienced coaches will facilitate your learning, at your pace!

Our Club - Why train with us?

UCLBJJ welcomes members of all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned grapplers. We take pride in our close-knit, active, and inclusive club culture, with a focus on skill development in a supportive and relaxed environment.    Last year, our athletes made impressive progress in just a few months, achieving great success in competition when it mattered most. We're aiming for more of the same this year! 

In addition to regular classes, we offer a range of social events, from combat sports watch parties and nights out to exploring the best of London with your grappling buddies! 

All classes will be held at Bloomsbury Fitness, which is located on the UCL Main Campus, in the Bloomsbury Theatre Building, floor 3. See below, and on our Instagram, for our timetable, and any other updates!

Memberships

Free Taster Membership - Gives you access to 1 completely free class! Valid at taster classes, or any class throughout the year, providing it is your first time.

£30 Full Membership - Gives you access to everything: classes, the content library and socials. You must have a membership if you intend to train with us again after your taster class.

It is really important that there are no pockets/zips on any items of clothing worn on the mats, as these are an injury risk, so please ensure you wear appropriate clothing, even if not UCL branded.

Tuesday, 13:30 - 15:00, Mixed Class (with Zach), Mandela Studio

Wednesday, 10:00 - 12:00, Mixed Class (with Bailey), Mandela Studio

Thursday, 13:00 - 15:00, Mixed Class (with Zach), Mandela Studio

Saturday, 10:00 - 12:00, Mixed Class (with Bailey), MPR

This year we have some slight amendments to our timetable. We have been put in the MPR on a Monday evening unfortunately, and I know this is a super accessible slot for many of you. In order to maximise the number of people who can train on a Monday, and meet individual demands,  we have decided to break up the slot and teach 2 classes:

Monday:

  • 20:00 - 21:00 (Fundamentals, MPR)
  •  21:00 - 22:00 (Structured Sparring, MPR)

These classes require 2 separate tickets. 

If you are attending these classes, we will need to make the changeover as smooth as possible. If you are sparring, please wait until the MPR is clear of the first group before you come in.

Below are descriptions of what to expect for each of our classes:

Fundamentals:

Perfect for beginners! This class focuses on core techniques, basic movements, and key principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including escapes, positional control and submissions, tailored for beginners to build a great grappling foundation! Please attend this class if you are new to the sport!

Structured Sparring Class:

This class is all about positional sparring. You'll have clear goals to focus on, helping you improve specific areas of your game, and take your grappling to the next level. Please attend this class if you have a few months of prior experience!

Mixed Classes:

These classes offer instruction for all experience levels, focusing on refining fundamental techniques while introducing more advanced concepts. We encourage skill development through drilling, positional training, and live sparring, in a positive and uplifting atmosphere. All are welcome! 

What you need:

If you are coming to train, please ensure you have the following:

  • A UCLBJJ membership (or free taster membership if not already redeemed)
  • A class ticket (book it here!)
  • Appropriate clothing - NO pockets or zips! (A pair of flip flops is also recommended!)
  • Good hygiene: Clip and file your nails, shower before and after class, always train in freshly washed clothing
  • A big smile and a great attitude!!!

Failure to have any of the aforementioned may result in you being denied entry to the class!
