Temi Bankole

Hi, I’m Temi and I would love to be your Paediatric Surgery Chair!

As soon as I knew I wanted to study medicine, paediatrics was my focus. I've further developed this passion through SSCs, from researching adverse effects of NICU hospitalisation during ‘Birth to 6 weeks’, to a child health inequalities SSC. My interest in surgery took off during my iBSc, where I explored prenatal surgical repair and cellular therapies for spina bifida. This was strengthened during surgery placements this year, where I took opportunities to spend days on-call and assist in procedures from lower limb ORIF to robot-assisted hernia repair.

Now, why vote for me?

  • Experience conducting a review with GOSH ICH has made me familiar with contacting experts in the field for their insight and seeking research opportunities.
  • Well-organised: event planning during roles on the RUMS events subcommittee 22/23 and Paeds Surg subcommittee 23/24.
  • Passion for teaching and training: taken on mentorship and advocacy roles, most recently as Y4 Academic Rep.

In this post, I aim to:

  1. Increase exposure to surgery through teaching series in preclinical years.
  2. Set up a student research network to maximise opportunities for collaborative research and publications.
  3. Improve engagement through a joint conference with adjacent societies in and outside UCL.

I hope to create a network in which a passion for paediatric surgery can be nurtured, so the best and brightest minds go towards raising more just like them.

Polina Zabelina

Hi, I’m Polina. I would love to be your paediatric surgery chair next year and to share my excitement for all things surgical and paediatric with the rest of surgical society members.

Having held the roles of program coordinator and core committee member on the Women in Surgery subcommittee, gave me extensive experience with organisation of surgical conferences over the past 2 years, while being a member of paediatric medsoc subcommittee allowed me to explore my interest in paediatrics.

My plans for paediatric surgery subcommittee:

  • Continue to deliver high-quality talks on various specialties within paediatric surgery

  • Hold more in-person events, including talks from paediatric consultants with opportunities for networking with the speakers and advise on finding research opportunities

  • Organise a paediatric surgery conference, potentially by collaborating with other London med schools, with opportunities to do poster presentations, attend panel events, surgical skills workshops and talks delivered by London’s leading paediatric surgeons

  • Get paediatric surgery subcommittee involved in London universities paediatric conference, which I helped out with this year as a member of Paediatric Medsoc events committee

  • Collaborate with other branches of surgical society and paediatric medsoc to deliver interactive tutorials

Thank you for giving this a read and I hope you vote for me :)

Manasi Dedhia

Hi my name is manasi and I would love to be paediatric surgery chair! Witnessing the excision of a spinal dermoid cyst from a little girl with myelomeningocele at great ormond street was a surreal experience. If given the opportunity to be paediatric surgery chair I would organise a talk with this renowned paediatric neurosurgeon so everyone can learn about his career journey and current research happening in this field. In addition to this I would really like to set up opportunities for students to witness surgeries like this and make the most of what the hospitals around us have to offer. Volunteering for UCL Next Top Doctor as well as taking the role of a telephone befriender for the elderly and working at Medic Mentor summer school, I have experience talking to and working with a diverse audience. I am hardworking, determined and have excellent time management, having balanced a variety of endeavours alongside my degree. Furthermore having been on Hindu society committee and rums events subcommittee this year I have experience working alongside others and excelling in my part to ensure success of the society. I have always enjoyed working in teams and being deputy head girl at school means I have organised events and liased with a variety of people. I’m energetic, love to get involved and have some fun so I hope I get the opportunity to be part of this amazing committee!

Anish Kalyana
Pravenaa Sivakumar

Thank you for considering my application :) Having been part of the Paediatric Surgery Subcommittee for the last 2 years, I've helped bring in a multitude of speakers to talk through unique paediatric surgery cases! My passion is paediatric oncology, and I've hosted an international conference for the British Oncology National Undergraduate Society and completed a Paediatrics and Child Health iBSc.

This year, I hope to accomplish much more:

  1. Exposure to Paediatric Surgery
    • Our paediatric teaching involves 1 module and a paediatric iBSc. If you missed these opportunities, then chiming into our talks will help you learn more about this niche subject
    • We will contact surgeons globally to speak to us. This is an incredible opportunity to learn from these amazing speakers and ask for personal advise
  2. Create a community to encourage people who’ve
    • a) always wanted to do surgery
    • b) are questioning whether surgery is for them
    • c) never considered surgery before
    • so, we can talk to experienced surgeons, SHOs and junior doctors on HOW and WHY they decided to go down this career path. Their wisdom can help guide our choices.
  3. Signpost activities and lectures so we can expand our portfolios
    • Whether it’s sharing a talk in another university, to collaborating with other societies to host a virtual/in person event, I want to ensure that you leave this year with a community of fellow aspiring paediatric surgeons and full to the brim with specialist knowledge!
