Candidates

Zheyuan Tony Yang (He/Him)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Over the past two years, I have been involved in a variety of media societies: From writing articles as part of The Cheese Grater investigations team, to making campus news and conducting alumni interviews in my time with Pi Media’s PiTV, and now writing reviews and covering film festivals as Co- Editor-in-Chief of the Film Society Journal.

For my work across Pi Media and UCL Film Society, I was selected as Best Contributor to the Media at the SU Arts Awards 2023.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Create more opportunities for members of different media societies to socialize and potentially collaborate
  • Advocate for greater exposure of student publications within the university, both across campus and digitally
  • Further expanding access to media societies through taster events
Please summarise why students should vote for you.

As someone who has found a home among the passionate writers and editors that make up UCL’s student media scene, I am passionate about ensuring everyone who wishes to make their voice heard finds a niche of writing to do so! As someone who is familiar with various different publications, I will make sure to hear opinions and feedback from many sources!

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

In my capacity as President of the Juggling and Circus Society, I have had the opportunity to contribute to UCL's student media scene by engaging in civic journalistic discourse on Twitter. For example, that time when we issued a statement explaining that we have been banned from Twitter by the SU. This was not true but we tweeted it anyway, not only because it was funny, but above all because we believe that misinformation is the backbone of British journalism. In the words of Penny Mordaunt, I will have courage, I will bring hope, and I will stand up and fight.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I will put an end to the Union oppression of The Cheese Grater Magazine. There is no reason why Pi Media should get its own office in the societies common room when The Cheese Grater isn't even classed as student media. Like I had to get a Pi taster just to nominate myself for this position. Now I accept that this may have been an oversight on the Union's behalf. But I draw the line at Pi's longstanding monopoly of this role. I have not looked up who have held the role in the past but from vague memory it has always been someone from Pi. I might also have made this up. But my point remains.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

When I was Accommodation Officer for the SU last year, I was told off by SU senior management for giving The Cheese Grater Magazine an interview about the delays scandal at UCL East, in which I confided certain conversations I have had with UCL Accommodation officials which they later told me 'breached the confidence between the Union and the SU'. At the time I backed down and apologised because I was a bastard and a coward. I would like to take this opportunity to rescind my apology and say that I intend to destroy this confidence once more as Societies Rep (Student Media).
