I am so excited to be running for Women in Surgery Chair! As a core committee member for the past 2 years, I’ve played a key role in organising UCL’s renowned Women in Surgery Conference and am eager to drive the society forward.

My previous experience includes WiNS Finance Director and Pre-Clinical Education Officer for Endocrinology. My expertise in leadership, education and finance equips me with the experience and passion to drive UCL Women in Surgery forward.

My Goals:

  1. Continued exposure to Surgical Specialties - Extending opportunities across both Term 1 + 2, ensuring year-round engagement
  2. Mentorship Scheme Expansion – Increasing accessibility so more students can connect with mentors in their desired specialties
  3. Panel Discussions & Surgical Skills Workshops – More frequent sessions throughout the year to enhance practical skills and career insights
  4. Inter-Uni Collaboration - more chances to meet like-minded people!
  5. WiNS Conference & Key Events – Continuing the success of the WiNS Conference alongside additional initiatives such as an International Women’s Day Symposium

Striving to inspire, support, and empower future surgeons, I am committed to listening to your voices, fostering inclusivity, and leaving a lasting impact on this society - one that continues to uplift and champion the next generation of women in surgery.

Samhita Shanmugasundaram

Driving Forward UCL Women in Surgery into Action

Aspiring female surgeons continue to face challenges, but with the right guidance, they thrive. As Chair, I aim to break barriers, expand opportunities, and foster a welcoming, action-driven community.

My experience as OMFS Chair, hosting an international symposium, and engaging in surgical societies has strengthened my commitment to inclusivity, equipping students with confidence, skills, and support.

Expanding WinS Initiatives:

  • Elevate the WinS Conference – Use real-time polls to tailor sessions to YOUR interests
  • Redefine Mentoring – Establish a structured, multi-tier system:
Junior Students → Senior Students → Surgical Trainees → Consultants
  • Strengthen Networks – Launch Coffee & Career Chats for termly guidance and support.
  • Enhance Skill Development – Deliver hands-on workshops on surgical techniques, portfolio building, and case discussions.
  • Showcase Diverse Careers – Expand Beyond the Knife, exploring academic surgery, med-tech, and global surgery.
  • Facilitate Early Exposure – Introduce a shadowing database to connect students with surgical opportunities.

With experience spanning surgical initiatives, breaking barriers to access, and academic research, I bring the vision, tenacity, and networks to propel WinS beyond inspiration into tangible impact.

Let’s build a thriving community of opportunity, where every aspiring surgeon feels empowered to excel!

Vote for me to drive change and inspire the next generation of female surgeons!
