Hello fellow surfers,

I am standing for trip sec because I love planning trips and I absolutely will use this as a form of procrastination and prioritise it over my studies.

  • I solemnly swear to organise you gnarly trips with gnarly waves. 🕺🕺🕺
  • I will make sure I live up to Assiya’s standards. 🫡
  • I was apparently Lanzarote trip’s life and soul of the group and I will ensure I bring these vibes on every trip. 😋

My priorities for the surf trips are:

  1. Waves
  2. Vibes
  3. Affordability
  4. Weather
  5. Accom
  6. Beer
  7. Food
  8. Make sure the hostel has a guitar
  9. Nutella
  10. Health and safety

Most importantly I will make sure you’re all sun-kissed and smiling throughout the trip. :)

Here are some of my relevant skills:

  • I thrive in a crisis so if anything goes wrong you are in safe hands.
  • I’m Welsh which means I’m a skilled bargainer so I will secure the best deals for us. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿💰
  • I also speak a bunch of languages which could be handy when we’re abroad idk.
  • My hobbies include browsing on sky scanner and watching surfing reels.
  • I’m first aid trained/ beach lifeguard/ ISA level 1 in surf instructing so I can whisper you cheeky tips for catching waves and being safe in the water ;)
  • I’ve actually got really good communication skills
  • I have lots of love for the surf club🫶🏻
Alex Barnett

Surf Club provides an incredibly welcoming and engaging community for students at UCL and at the center of that community are the Surf Trips.  The trips provide an opportunity to escape London, reconnect with nature, and do some great surfing with some great people.

However, the high cost is a barrier to entry for many members and the number one obstacle I would address as Trip Secretary.  The Surf Trips can cost over £300 before flights.  This prohibitive cost is why me and several friends chose to organise our own Surf trips independent of the Club.  Over the last reading week we went to Tagazhout in Morocco for a week.  It cost £200 including flights and food.

We accomplished this by putting a lot of time and effort into finding good deals for every element of the trip and specifically looking at which locations are  affordable at which dates.  I will bring this experience and methodology to planning the Surf Trips next year so more of our community can enjoy them.

The other pillar of my platform is empowering members to organise smaller trips during weekends and Bank holidays.  If there’s interest in a swell building of Cornwall for example, I will help coordinate a group to drive down and sort out the logistics of renting a car and finding accommodation.

To conclude, if you want more trips, great vibes, and excellent waves for less money, vote Alex!

Whether you find yourself washed up in Waikiki, Tahiti, or Bali- as surf trip sec I'll have you covered. Collectively I'll make sure we find a way to sustainably long-board (or short board) our way across the globe. With a love for adventure and the skills for organizing chaos into exciting travel plans, I’ll make sure our trips are packed with waves, good vibes, and minimal lost passports. I'm always open to hearing and fulfilling everyone's needs to make sure that the 2025/26 surf season is the gnarliest one yet. So here's to riding the wave of successful surf trips for another year. Vote for me and vote for barrels ;)
