This has been my first year at UCL, and the Tennis society has played a vital role in my UCL life thus far, both through socials and BUCS.

The Tennis socials have been a key part of my social life in my first year, which has led me to apply for this role. I have attended most of the Wednesday socials which have allowed me to become closer with my team members as well as those from different teams in different age groups.

As social secretary I would aim to spur greater participation across all teams in our Wednesday socials, creating a large and inclusive atmosphere that would motivate all members to attend. I would also like to create new events besides our Wednesday socials and Christmas ball, such as a bowling or mini golf social so that all members can get to know each other more personally while also having lots of fun.

I am an organised person who has had leadership roles in the past proving my suitability for the role. I am determined to make the most out of this position to help better the society, should I be offered the role.

Maria Volkov

I was social secretary for the tennis society this year. I helped organize weekly Wednesday socials as well as other social events. I will apply my prior experience to organizing more sports nights as well as having more society events. I am also a very active member of the society and if elected, I would look forward to making it more fun for our current members and more welcoming for the new members!

Nicole Sitou

Joining UCL tennis has allowed me to meet tennis players and supporters from different parts of the university, with training and socials every week. UCL tennis has become one of the highlights of my first-year experience and it is also because of this that I stand to ensure members have a fun experience within this tennis community.

With a range of social events always running throughout the year, I believe I can utilise my past experiences of organising events such as friendly tournaments into uniting all members. As social secretary, I would contribute to the tennis community and allow members from all different teams to join and participate in a range of events, from socials to bigger events such as the tennis ball. I would also encourage the tennis society to plan events with other societies and, perhaps, even the tennis societies of other universities!

I look forward to promoting more social events within the committee and society for future events such as nights at the rocket and more! It is also essential to not only relieve stress experienced by students in socials and allow for the tennis spirit to be spread. I hope to contribute as a social secretary and be able to spread more passion towards this community not only in training but also in the social aspect.

Luke Eadie

Bleed purple, bleed scala, bleed tennis.

This is, and forever will be, my life mantra.

When I was first born, or so my parents relate, the first word which sprang to my infant lips was that of our glorious game. Since then, I haven't looked back. Wednesday tennis, Saturday tennis, Sunday tennis - I'd be at Finsbury Park every last day of the week if my degree allowed me the chance.

My ambition for tennis 23-24 is to dial up our socials. Everyone knows we can thump K*L on the courts but the question on my lips is can we chop more pints (beer or non-alcoholic, we're very inclusive) than the scum. I'd like to move on the socials from a simple, occasional Rocket excursion to something far more expansive.

I'm talking Phineas. I'm talking Mullys. I'm talking Court. And most importantly of all, I'm talking the finest club, not just in Kings Cross, but this side of the Atlantic. I want to be receiving desperate pleas begging for a Friday social during reading week because tennis (and/or a crippling need for alcohol) is the only thing that can prise you from your unmade bed in the morning.

If you're as passionate about the unparalleled sh*thousery which unfolds circa 12-5 on a dank Wednesday afternoon as I am or you just want to have a good time with a top set of lads, please vote me in.

I need this role - I can't afford to be buying my own scala tickets every week in this cost of living crisis...

Yours faithfully,

Luke Eadie x

Ryoma Okabe

Hi everyone, my name is Ryoma Okabe and I’m a R&D first-year student. I am running for Social Secretary because I met a lot of my friends at the Rocket and the Winter Ball and want newcomers to feel the same welcome.

As a social sec, I will engage and attract new members by trying to increase interactions between BUCS, LUSL and R&D. In addition to the weekly Wednesday socials, I intend to host screening nights for tennis matches or the Rugby World Cup, so that we can all cheer for our favourite player/team under a unified atmosphere. On top of organising events early, I also intend to work closely with the charity officer to outreach and host more charity events (eg. This Girl Can, LGBTQ+, Ukraine, Turkey-Syria etc). By promoting such events, I think we can increase the inclusivity and public impact of our Tennis Club.

I have a rich experience of being organisers of events, for instance, the Producer of my high school’s Graduation Ceremony. With my seniors, I worked especially hard on creating memory-lane videos to begin and end the ceremony. I also negotiated with the parents’ union so that the ceremony could be documented and temporarily streamed on Youtube afterwards. These experiences taught me how to generate enthusiasm, not just amongst members, but potential members as well. I am confident that my creativity will be an asset to UCL Tennis.
