Aadil A Ali

My interest in T+O is growing, having recently attended the RSM Future of Orthopaedic Surgeons Conference, BOMSA London Undergraduate Symposium and organised orthopaedic taster weeks at UCLH and Kovai Medical Centre Hospital in India. I have taken initiative and curated an extensive range of contacts with various surgeons, who range in different stages in their careers. This has further developed my understanding of the speciality and the pathway for medical students. Notably, I have experience in multiple surgical societies as a Conference Facilitator for iNUGSC 2023 and as an Education Officer for BISA. As Conference Facilitator I succeeded in procuring 6 world renowned speakers to attend, liaising with the Conference Executive weekly to discuss advertising and sponsorship.

I believe that there should be an increase in T+O events and emphasis on education in this speciality. I will aim to develop:

  • Talks on Leadership, Diversity and Women in Orthopaedics
  • Pathways and how to get into Specialty Training
  • A practical workshop in tandem with the surgical skills officers

Furthermore my main aim would be to establish a UCL Surgical Society Orthopaedic Conference. I feel that my experiences and my contacts with consultants and Orthopaedic trainees holds me in a strong position to produce this.

T+O is an important speciality and I hope to emphasise that next year. I hope you see that my range of experiences and passion for this specialty make me the ideal candidate.

Max Aboutorabi

Hi, I'm Max and I'm excited to run for the position of Trauma and Orthopaedics Chair.

During my clinical placement, I discovered a passion for orthopaedics, and I am enthusiastic to share this with other like-minded students.

As Chair, my primary goal would be to provide opportunities for students to explore the field of orthopaedics. I would do this by:

  • Organising engaging talks and workshops that allow students to learn from experts in the field. I believe that by connecting students with surgeons, they can learn more about the career path and what it takes to be a successful surgeon in the highly competitive specialty. I have been fortunate enough to be in contact with several surgeons and hope to continue to liaise with them to organise these events.
  • Provide orthopaedic tutorials to students on their clinical rotations. These student-led tutorials will cover everything from the relevant MSK anatomy to surgical procedures. This will help students gain a deeper understanding of the field before entering the operating room.

My experience on the vascular surgery and paediatrics subcommittees have given me valuable insight into how the medical societies operate and how to set up successful talks. Furthermore, my time as Head of Tutors for medsoc has provided me with the skills to organise effective tutorials.

I'm excited about the opportunity to help students explore their interests in orthopaedics.

Thank you for considering me for the position.

Thomas Luo

Hi everyone, I am Thomas Luo, a year 4 graduate medical student. I stand for the Trauma & Orthopaedics Chair, hoping to inspire more students to develop an interest in the orthopaedic surgery career, and to provide academic support for all medical students.

As the T&O Chair, I will invite orthopaedic surgeons to deliver a series of talks featuring surgical CV and a career in orthopaedic surgery, trauma surgery, upper limbs, lower limbs, etc. I will organise MMB revision tutorials with OCAPE tips for year 2 students. I will also organise T&O revision tutorials for clinical year students. I will actively communicate with orthopaedic surgeons and identify opportunities (including career information, research project, work experience, etc.) for society members. For communication I will run an Instagram account dedicated to T&O. Finally, I will help other committee members in organising events, especially national and international surgical conferences.

I developed my passion for orthopaedics surgery after my T&O rotation at UCLH and would like to encourage more students to explore this specialty. I have previously been in the 21/22 SurgSoc Neurosurgery Subcommittee and helped contact neurosurgeons for speaker events. I am also very familiar with the preclinical curriculum and have previously won the Prankerd Jones Prize in Year 2. Therefore, I can provide tailored academic help for preclinical students.

I sincerely hope you can support me to hold the T&O Chair. Thank you.

Sandhya Krishnamoorthy

Hi everyone, I'm Sandhya and I am so excited to be running for Trauma and Orthopaedics chair!

I hope to bring EDI to the forefront of our discussions with T&O, and particularly shine a light on the underrepresentation of women in T&O, in comparison with other surgical specialties; to improve this severe gender disparity, our work should start at medical school, and I hope to facilitate student exposure to the specialty and provide female role models a platform to encourage students. As a publicity officer with UCLPRAS, I have a strong understanding of how a highly successful international conference and skills course is run, as well as how to direct social media to capture a diverse audience.

I hope to further expand our collaboration with other medical schools to provide a wide range of networking opportunities as I have found this to be an invaluable way of seeking unique prospects within an seemingly inaccessible specialty in medical school, especially pre-clinically.

My aims as T&O chair would be to increase drive for in-person anatomy teaching with a surgical focus, regular skills workshops in order to improve pre-clinical understanding of surgical skills, and to provide networking opportunities and direct contacts for students to gain further exposure and hands-on experience within the field. Finally, I hope to bring a range of female T&O surgeons to the spotlight, to elucidate the gender disparity within the field and further encourage inclusion.
