Alan Xu

Hello, everyone, I'm Alan,

I am a 1st-year undergraduate studying archaeology and anthropology. For the one year that I've been in UCL, I have participated in the Men's Volleyball team, the UCL weekend volleyball league, as well as some social sessions. The volleyball society has been extremely welcoming and the people and friends I've met through my time participating in club activities have been nothing but amazing. As a treasure nominee, there are some ideas that I would like to put forth to help create an even better environment for everyone joining the society. Through participating in social sessions and other club events, I've realized an issue with the ticketing system. Many of the club members aren't able to participate in many social sessions despite purchasing the club membership. Many others participating in other events have struggled with getting paid or getting their supposed refund. I believe there is a lack of transparency around club expenditure that makes members extremely frustrated and confused in many situations. I hope with my abilities, I would be able to resolve these problems with my peers and provide all club members with an equal and transparent mode of organization. Appreciate all of you for spending your time going through this!

Thank you!

Sophia Tazi

Hey everyone!

I am Sophia, half French half Moroccan. I am a second year studying Mechanical Engineering.

I played Volleyball for 6 years before coming to Uni and I had the opportunity to be the mixed 2 team captain this year. This role required me to be very organized as I had to plan the team’s training/games/socials every week. By building a strong cohesion within the team and communicating with all the competing teams, I had the opportunity to improve my communication and leadership skills.

I absolutely loved being captain this year! I believe that the skills I have developed through my experience as captain would be powerful assets for the position I am running for: TREASURER !!

I will keep an eye on the society’s finance, making sure that we have enough funds to organize as many trainings as we can, crazy social events and hopefully some fun Volleyball trips. I will also help looking for potential sponsors that could finance our projects. This year, as captain, I had to ask for some refunds and book venues for practices, giving me an insight into the tasks the treasurer needs to go through. Also, I was volleyball society rep in high school where I accomplished to validate my proposal for an international beach volleyball competition in Morocco by raising funds from several sponsors.

If I am elected, I promise you to be 100% committed and to do my best to offer you the best Volleyball experience ever !!

VOTE SOPHIA !!

I think the role of treasurer is especially significant for me as it allows me a transparent window on how finances are managed. Particularly, I am interested in how our club budget can be better managed to possibly allow bigger courts for not only social sessions but also for competitive training. Perhaps, if the budget is managed more efficiently, club members can enjoy both greater court capacity and also more sessions. I'd like to explore the potential of this especially because of how some volleyball members pay for a membership and cannot even show up at social volleyball as a result of the ticket system. Although the club is quite big, I still think this is not an excuse to not try to accomodate everyone else. If the budget is insufficient, perhaps we can engage in some fundraising activities to overcome that barrier. Furthermore, I believe in that members of the club should have a greater say over how the budget should be used. I think this can be done by sending out surveys to see what activities members of the society want to engage in. All in all, helping to facilitate a good experience for all members and carry out activities that people truly would show up to and engage in.
