Samuel Vandak

My name is Sam and this year I have been social sec at Squash. I believe that with Vicent we have done a good job at organizing socials and sports nights. I am looking forward to bringing my pro-activity into the role of welfare officer!

Mei Nakamura

Those who know me will unanimously agree that I am the last person to get out of bed for a sport. Six months ago, I was dragged by my friend to one of the squash taster sessions. Needless to say, I was excited but extremely nervous the night before - meeting strangers after spending 2 years under COVID restrictions was terrifying. However, to my surprise, everyone from beginners to experienced players welcomed us warmly (even though I was running like a chicken around the small court.) I decided to be part of the squash community right after that. As your prospective Welfare Secretary, I would like you to experience the same joy I felt.

Why should you vote for me?

  1. Ensuring your safety is my foremost priority. Any inappropriate behaviours will not be tolerated, so members can freely play and attend events without having to worry about their welfare being threatened.
  2. No barriers should exist in our community. It goes without saying that regardless of your level, gender, or nationality, you can participate in any activity that you wish to. Developing a strong culture of inclusivity is a prerequisite for you to feel supported and encouraged.
  3. I will be someone with whom you can consult about pretty much any concerns you have regarding the club/activities. Building trust is critical in ensuring that you feel accepted and creating a friendly environment. Also, I think I don't bite.

I hope you will entrust me with this role!

Chloe Tung

I am running for Welfare Secretary because I hope to ensure that UCL Squash remains a safe and inclusive environment for all. Having only participated sporadically in my first year due to covid, it was so nice finally being able to join the women's team this year and actually meet everyone properly. I was struck by how welcoming everyone was and have thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie that has come with being part of a group. I would love the opportunity to get others involved and have a few priorities in mind.

Firstly, I aim to maintain a supportive and respectful environment for members to improve and have fun. I hope to instil a level of friendly yet healthy competitiveness across all levels and to set up a framework for members to teach, encourage and help each other out.

I also wish to promote women's participation in squash. This was the first year we saw so many girls show up to trials and I hope the club continues along this trajectory. Gender barriers and discrimination will not stand, and I promise to be there for anyone who encounters any issues in this regard.

Overall, I aim to act as a point of contact for anyone who may have concerns relating to any inappropriate behaviour, or simply just as a friendly presence in the day-to-day goings of the club. The overall welfare of the club is extremely important and I will do my best to safeguard against any issues. I am always open for a chat and I hope you will trust me with this role.
