🏛️ Join Us for Conservation at Southwark Cathedral!
Want a unique, hands-on experience with history?
Come along to Southwark Cathedral to help maintain and care for this iconic building. You’ll take part in Conservation Housekeeping Volunteering, working closely with a professional conservator to learn practical skills for caring for historic monuments, tombstones, and pillars. You do not need any experience as you will be guided by experienced staff and volunteers throughout the day. Come for the history, stay for the skills, good company, and the satisfaction of making a real difference!
This event supports the Cathedral’s conservation housekeeping volunteer group in maintaining the fabric of the building. It’s an excellent opportunity for students interested in conservation, architecture, or volunteering behind the scenes of a historic site.

Why Conservation?
Volunteering at the Cathedral is a unique way to learn practical conservation skills, explore historic architecture, and contribute to the upkeep of a cultural landmark. You’ll also get the chance to engage with visitors and share knowledge about your work if you’d like.
What to wear: Comfortable clothes and flat shoes suitable for cleaning tasks. All PPE and equipment will be provided. Bring a packed lunch. Limited lockers are available, and lunch can be eaten in the Chapter Room.
Location: Millennium Courtyard entrance, Southwark Cathedral, Montague Close, London SE1 9DA (outside the Café)
Meet Point: 09:30 at the ground floor of the Bloomsbury Theatre Building
What to Expect
- Learn & Contribute: Start with training from Conservator Debbie Garton, using microfiber cloths, special brushes, and vacuum backpacks. Then work in small groups on conservation housekeeping tasks throughout the Cathedral.
- Meet Like-Minded People: Connect with fellow UCL students interested in history, architecture, and heritage conservation.
- Accessible Volunteering: Some areas are wheelchair accessible, and seats are provided for those who need them. Staff will ensure everyone can take part safely.
