- Hosted by Energy Society
Welcome to Term 2 everyone!
To kick off the term, we are excited to invite you to the Energy Society Strategy Challenge Evening, where we will explore how new and emerging energy technologies could power a Net Zero future on a hypothetical island, under very real-world constraints.
In this interactive session, participants will be divided into teams and tasked with designing an optimal energy strategy for a challenging terrain, using technologies that are up-and-coming and not yet fully commercialised. Details about the technologies and their features will be provided on the day. Teams will debate trade-offs, justify assumptions, and defend why their proposed solution represents the best path forward.
Technologies that may be explored include:
- Nuclear fusion
- Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
- Hydrogen and fuel cells
- Wave and tidal power
- Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS)
- Space-based solar
- Carbon capture and storage (as a supporting technology)
To keep the challenge engaging, the problem statement and detailed technology properties will not be released in advance. However, if you wish to do some light pre-reading, you can select a technology of interest in the form below and update yourself with the current NEWS and development in the area. No preparation is expected - resource materials will be provided, along with 30 minutes during the session to research and develop your pitch.
The winning team will receive a prize from the society.
The evening ends with a fun energy-themed trivia challenge, followed by informal networking.
