The Latin Programme - Via Facilis is small educational charity. Our aim is to improve English literacy, and thus the life chances, of children attending under-achieving state primary schools through the the study of Latin and English grammar. Our teachers visit primary schools across London and use storytelling, games, songs, raps and critical thinking to create an exciting and innovative environment in which students enjoy learning.Classes taught range from Years 3 to 6. The work done in class and the lesson plans are tailored to meet the needs of both the school and the pupils, with a focus on mixed abilities and different learning strategies. In the 10 years that we have been running we have transformed Latin's reputation from a fusty, irrelevant language into a vibrant and vital classroom tool. Our creative methods have proven results with 100% of our Year 6 students attaining a Level 4 or higher upon leaving primary school. We are currently looking for enthusiastic, creative and Latin savvy volunteers to become Teaching Assistants. Working alongside our highly trained teachers, our Teaching Assistants are essential in the classroom. Tasks include working one-to-one with students who are struggling, assisting in and leading aspects of lessons and games, partaking in the planning of the curriculum and the designing of activities, etc. Successful volunteers will be mentored by the Latin Programme teacher to engage classes with mixed abilities and to tackle behavioural problems while promoting literacy and Latin.
