What would you like the Union to do?

To follow the International Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 on all SU social media accounts and on the SU website. The guidelines are available here: https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/

These guidelines include the provision of image descriptions or alternative text for images posted on all social media platforms and within articles on the SU website. They also include the provision of transcripts or equal information for all videos produced by the SU. The guidelines include specific information on digital accessibility for all types of disability, including visual impairment, hearing loss, mobility impairments and learning disabilities.

To promote the guidelines to UCL societies and networks and to support them in improving their digital accessibility.

The DSN should meet with the Union’s Systems team on ensuring the development of the new website meets these guidelines.

Why would you like to do this?

Students with any disability including visual and/or hearing impairments should be able to access all content on SU social media channels and the SU website, and currently this is not always the case.

This policy will also support the SU’s adherence to the Equality Act 2010 by ensuring accessibility for disabled students.

How will this affect students?

This will allow all UCL students to be able to access all the content on SU social media channels and the SU website. This will bolster the SU’s ethos of inclusivity and allow for greater participation by disabled students.
