Help us collect winter coats for people who need them most by volunteering at our UCL Winter Coat Drive

As the colder months approach, donated coats can make a real difference to people experiencing homelessness, financial hardship or other challenging circumstances. By giving a little of your time, you can help ensure that pre-loved winter coats find their way to someone who needs them.

We're looking for enthusiastic UCL students to help run our collection stall, encourage donations across campus and support the collection and transportation of coats.

Wrap Up London is an annual campaign that collects pre-loved winter coats and redistributes them to people experiencing hardship through charities and community organisations across London. By donating and volunteering, you can help give unwanted coats a new lease of life while providing warmth and support to people who need it.

Volunteer Responsibilities

As a volunteer, you'll help support the Winter Coat Drive by:

  • Manning the coat collection stall and welcoming people making donations.
  • Walking around campus to promote the collection and encourage students and staff to donate.
  • Recording the number of coats donated, helping us track contributions for our club and society donation competition.
  • Taking any overflow of donated coats to the designated storage facility during your shift.
  • Helping transport collected coats to the donation centre at the end of your shift.

Volunteers will be working independently during their allocated shifts rather than as part of a supervised group volunteering session.

Mandatory Volunteer Briefing

All volunteers must attend one of the following online briefings before starting their volunteering shifts:

  • Friday 13 November, 1–2pm
  • Monday 16 November, 1–2pm

The briefing will cover your responsibilities, collection arrangements and everything you need to know before volunteering.

Further details and the online meeting link will be shared with registered volunteers.

Available Volunteering Shifts

The Winter Coat Drive will run from Tuesday 17 November to Friday 20 November 2026.

There are two shifts available each day:

  • Morning shift: 10am–1pm
  • Afternoon shift: 1pm–4pm

You can sign up for as many shifts as you like, depending on your availability.

Please note that the final hour of the afternoon shift (3–4pm) is particularly important, as this is when donations from UCL clubs and societies will be accepted.

Volunteer Recognition

We really appreciate everyone giving their time to support this campaign!

Students who complete three or more volunteering shifts will be nominated for a Volunteer of the Month award, with the chance to win a £20 Love2Shop voucher.

Travel and Lunch Expenses

  • Travel expenses can be claimed in line with the UCL Students' Union volunteering expenses policy.
  • Volunteers completing a full six-hour day (10am–4pm) on the collection stall can also claim lunch expenses of up to £10.

Please ensure you follow the relevant expenses guidance when submitting any claims.
