What's a Climate Hack?

We have taken our Social Hackathon model and focused it specifically on the climate, ahead of the Sustainability Leadership conference, running 9-11 June. We anticipate participants will produce a Climate Action Plan or similar such output, keeping this activity focused on action and making change and not simply knowledge-generation. It's very different to writing an essay - and much more like real life.

Working with and for a non-profit organisation in the sector, this 2-day activity provides students with a super practical activity related to topics to be covered at the conference. A problem, or challenge, is provided by the organisation that 20 bright young and brilliant minds could help solve. There'll be a little training and development moment, as well as team building, to kick day 1 off, before you head out to meet the organisation. They'll introduce the topic and the context and then, as team, you'll have you first moment to reflect and outline a plan of action to solve the problem. At the end of day 2, you'll feedback to a panel, made up of your organisation and others experts.

By booking a ticket via this page, you are expressing interest to this event. We will ask you to confirm your space closer to the time. If the event becomes oversubscribed, we will email all ticket holders asking them to confirm their space.

Skills you can expect to flex

  • Teamwork: how good a team player are you really?
  • Leadership: where are you in your leader journey?
  • Communication: do you listen well or are you all talk?
  • Sharing power: are you prepared to value knowledge from other sectors?
  • Problem-solving: can you identify issues, make an analysis, and generate solutions?
  • Reporting & presenting: how good are you at pulling together info to present in a short time?

I feel a bit shy

We know it is easy to say 'don't worry about it'. We have given this a lot of thought though, to make sure students can rock up at one of our events and feel instantly like they belong. We started by making sure you  meet your Hacking team ahead of time, providing you with refreshments along the way - great conversations start over great coffee, right, making sure you design your own name badge, and finally, making sure each of our event check-ins is run by a one of our lovely Student Event Hosts. Thaina, our lead Event Host, will welcome you warmly to our space and help you work out how you want to get started.

So why should I do this?

  • This Climate Hack will get your creative juices flowing, ahead of the Sustainability Leadership conference.
  • Even if you are not going to the conference, your experience will be invaluable and will 100% be something you can reflect about and include in job applications and interviews!
  • Even if you do not think you'll work in the sustainability sector, the skills you'll develop (or find out you need to improve) are super transferable and help you move forward beyond university.
  • Afterwards, you'll know 19 other people interested in working like this. We always see new friendships starting at our events!
  • You need to be in it, to win it - you have no idea what the future holds and what could be ignited from taking part.
