Join Us for a Volunteer Day at Surrey Docks Farm – Animal Care & Horticulture, Rotherhithe

Join fellow UCL students for a hands-on volunteering day helping with animal care and horticulture tasks at Surrey Docks Farm. Activities include mucking out stables, feeding goats and sheep, pruning hedges, and improving the farm’s gardens and paths.


Surrey Docks Farm is a community-led charity dedicated to providing urban residents, schools, and local groups with the chance to engage with farming, sustainability, and animal care. The farm runs education programmes, community projects, and provides a safe space for people to connect with nature and animals in the heart of London.

🧤 What’s a Big Help Out?

Big Help Outs are fun one-off volunteering opportunities that involve a big group. It's all about small actions creating big change when we work together. At our events, you’ll always find friendly student and staff faces to make sure you feel welcome and supported.

Why Join in?

Your time and effort will directly support Surrey Docks Farm’s community projects, improving local green spaces and animal welfare. To support your involvement, travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Please arrive on time as we will leave promptly to start the day together. If you prefer, you can also meet us directly at the venue at Surrey Docks Farm, Rotherhithe St, South Wharf, London SE16 5ET

👥 What to Expect:

  • Get Hands-On: Muck out stables, hand-feed animals, and learn about their care.
  • Take Action: Prune hedges, top up raised beds with compost, and spread woodchip on paths.
  • Connect: Meet farm staff and fellow students, learn about urban farming and sustainability, and make a lasting impact on the community.

Additional Information:

  • Wear comfortable, layered clothing suitable for gardening and animal care. Covered footwear is essential; wellies are recommended.
  • Bring sun cream, a hat, and a waterproof coat in case of rain.
  • Volunteers with allergies should bring antihistamines, and anyone with injuries or health conditions should inform farm staff at the start.
  • A dedicated room will be available for lunch, breaks, and storing personal belongings. Tea and coffee will be provided.
