Hackathon: Global challenge, Social Enterprise solution

Join the Student Social Enterprise team and UCL IDEA Society for a 2‑day hackathon where you’ll help grow ‘Headline’ – a healthcare training social enterprise in Nepal – and explore how it could expand its impact across emerging economies. Over the weekend, you’ll work in small interdisciplinary teams to design solutions that support Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs), the backbone of rural healthcare delivery, and strengthen Headline’s model for scale.

About ‘Headline’

‘Headline’ was created after the 2015 Nepal earthquakes to improve long‑term access to healthcare in rural areas by supporting Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs). The project team works with government‑accredited FCHV training providers to digitise, refine and expand existing training materials, and to train local facilitators to embed these tools into current programmes.

Across two days you will:

  • Learn about Headline’s work with FCHVs and the realities of delivering healthcare training in rural Nepal.
  • Tackle live challenges around digitising training content, supporting local facilitators and adapting Headline’s model to other emerging economies.
  • Prototype practical solutions and pitch your ideas to a panel including representatives from IDEA Society, Headline and the Student Social Enterprise team.

Who’s it for?

This hackathon is open to UCL students from any discipline who are curious about social impact, healthcare, international development or emerging markets. No prior experience is needed, but places are limited to 40 participants, so advance booking is essential.
