Sport at UCL is powered by volunteers - from committee members of our 80+ sports clubs to marshals at our mass participation events like The UCL Campus Run.
As part of Student Volunteering Week, we are celebrating our student volunteers by highlighting their contribution and encouraging more people to take up the opportunities.
Izz was a started as a participant in Project Active's Learn To... Tennis programme as a complete beginner. She has now become a regular activator, helping other students learn the sport and be active.
Izz’s commitment to getting involved and giving back makes her a fantastic part of the UCL tennis community.
Activators volunteer across our social sport programmes to faciliate sessions, making sure all UCL students feel welcome and enjoy their experience.
Meet Izzati Izyani Japar, PHD student and activator

We asked Izzati about her experience as an activator
What has been your favourite part of volunteering at our sports sessions or events, and why?
At first, I was interested in becoming a tennis activator because I wanted to play more tennis. At that time, I did not know I would also be involved in other sports (e.g., ice skating), which has become my favourite part of being a sport activator. I have always liked trying new sports, so I am glad I am able to do that in this role. I also enjoy volunteering, which makes this experience even more meaningful for me. I like that I can meet new people with the same interests and encourage as many people as possible to play tennis while being an activator.
How has being a sports activator or volunteer helped you develop your skills, confidence, or experience?
I initially lacked confidence in guiding beginners in tennis when I began this role. This was partly because I had not done this kind of role in a while, partly because I was not confident in my speaking skills, and partly because I was still unsure about my own tennis ability, as I had only started playing again a year ago. However, over time, through being an activator, both my tennis skills and my communication skills gradually improved, and I now feel much more confident giving tips and supporting students.
What would you say to another student who is thinking about getting involved in volunteering in sport at UCL?
Go for it! Volunteering in sport is a great way to try different activities, meet new people with similar interests, and gain confidence in guiding others. I really enjoy it, and I am sure you would not regret it.
Thinking about becoming a volunteer too?
Why not start your volunteering journey with TeamUCL Playmakers. The programme provides clear pathways to engage in development opportunities beyond playing sport, allowing you to start your journey as it suits you.
Have you heard about the Sports Leadership and Volunteering Fund? All UCL students are eligible to apply for a sports qualification or course to be subsidised.
