A thrilling weekend of BUCS Nationals action in Sheffield saw 6 of our clubs compete on the piste, track and more. With other 4000 competitors from universities across the UK, this is the showcase weekend of the BUCS sporting calendar!
It was a great showing in fencing across the weekend, with elite athletes taking home two medals. Max Cromie achieved silver in Men’s Sabre on Saturday, narrowly missing out on the gold in a thrilling bout that ultimately ended 15-14. On Sunday, representing TeamUCL for the first time, Alex Culkin fought his way to a bronze medal in Men’s Foil.
Over in Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Swimming and Karate took centre stage. In the pool amongst some fierce competition, there were strong swims from Swimming Club, and we also said goodbye to a stalwart on the elite athlete programme. Joining us in 2016, Phyllida Britton represented TeamUCL for the final time. We wish her all the best in the future and have been proud to be a part of her swimming journey!
For Karate Club, it was a successful weekend for Helen Zhang and Mabel Brand in women’s novice kumite. Coming against strong competitors from Warwick and Nottingham, the pair achieved individual bronze medals!
On Saturday, Climbing and Mountaineering Club got their competition underway, with 15 members of the club taking part at the Climbing Works. With only 12 climbers qualifying for the final in a field of over 300 competitors, the club was up against strong competition, with the climbing final always one of the highlights of the weekend!
It was a jam packed weekend of action in the England Institute of Sport for Running, Athletics and Cross Country Club On the track, there was season and personal bests galore for TeamUCL competitors. In the Long Jump final, a future one to watch was born, with Abraham Sharif jumping 7.21m and placing 5th overall! Across the hall, Badminton Club had an enjoyable weekend, with multiple members making the main draw, including an all UCL tie in the first round of the Women's doubles. Overall, it was a fantastic weekend of sport for TeamUCL and we were lucky enough to catch all our clubs in action. We're looking forwards to BUCS Nationals 2026 already!
