UCL Swimming Club is an exciting club that provides students with the opportunity to socialise, train and compete as part of UCL's swimming team. Founded in 2012, our club has rapidly grow to one of the largest sport's clubs with more than 110+ members every year.
The club is open to all students - UCL, RUMS, fresher, postgraduate, and all swimming abilities - whether you swim competitively, for fitness, a beginner or just socially! Our main aim is to provide a club that is friendly and fun with a great social side, bit of banter and strong team-spirit all centred around improving swimming ability, performance and achievement!
We have two tiers of membership for the year: fitness and competitive. Fitness swimmers have up to 4 hours of training per week and Competitive swimmers have 4.5 hours, including land training.
Training is provided accordingly to ability so you'll be with similar swimmers and never feel out of place. For those who take their swimming seriously and want more training, professional coaching and the opportunity to compete at regional and national level there is our competitive squad. The fitness squad is geared towards swimmers of all abilities (you must know how to swim in order to join the fitness squad) who wish to swim for leisure in a non-competitive environment. It is split into three tiers of varying difficulty so whether you're an ex-competitive swimmer or someone still getting to grips with front crawl, the fitness squad has something to offer everyone.
We know the importance of a cohesive, unified club and so we also have an extensive social calendar with weekly sports nights, regular social events and two dedicated social secretaries oversee all things fun!
To come to our fitness sessions, simply buy your non-competitive membership and join our Whatsapp group to keep up to date with training and book your slots for Monday and Thursday sessions. You can come to as many or as few sessions as you like so just turn up whenever you're able to!
In the sessions, we will provide you a swimming set (i.e. instructions) with drills for you to follow. You can ask any member of committee present at the trainings any question you have about a stoke and we'll be able to help you out.
Times and locations for Fitness squad training sessions:
Mondays 8pm-9pm at St Pancras Pool (Requires booking through Whatsapp group)
Wednesdays 3pm-4pm (Low fitness) at Oasis Pool
Wednesdays 4pm-5pm (Intermediate and High fitness) at Oasis Pool
Thursdays 8pm-9pm at St Pancras Pool (Requires booking through Whatsapp group)
N.B. Wednesday's first session is classed as Low fitness, by which we mean it is an hour dedicated to those still getting to grips with the correct technique of certain strokes. There will be a fitness captain stood at the end of the pool ready to answer any questions you have about a stroke's technique or any other question you might have. Anyone can come to these but there will only be Intermediate and Low fitness sets for this hour.
You will need to take part in trials at the beginning of the year to be part of the competitive team; we are also going to hold another round of trials at the start of term 2 for people who couldn't make it to trials in term 1. Please do not buy competitive membership until the captains have confirmed your place on the team. You can still buy fitness membership whilst waiting for the results and upgrade to the competitive membership later though.
The times (click here to see) have been adjusted to mitigate the extended periods out of training last year, so don’t be put off - come try anyway!
