Winners Announced for the 2024
End of Year Awards

Congratulations to all the winners who have been announced for the 2024 End of Year Awards. Celebrating the very best across Arts, Sports, and Community activities, the shows were hosted by the Students' Union President, Mary Mcharg and broadcasted by Film Society exclusively in the Bloomsbury Theatre.

Sports

Sportswoman of the Year was awarded to Luisa Degen. Luisa is the foundation of Women’s Basketball – she coaches all three teams alongside playing for the 1ST team with unwavering dedication that helped them secure a league and cup double.

The Unsung Hero Award was presented by it's previous winner, Issy Smith, and was awarded to Bella Gilbert for her unparalleled dedication to the Muay Thai club. Bella has been awarded for going above and beyond in delivering extended training sessions, event planning, and supporting members wherever possible.

Mandy Walker Cup for Sports Personality of the Year was taken home by Demetri Alvanis. As well as being President of Calisthenics, this year he worked tirelessly as Sports Officer, kickstarted TeamUCL’s All Jokes Aside mental health campaign, and set up the first National Governing Body for Calisthenics.

Arts

Altay Shaw won Best Contributor to the Media in recognition of his research skills. Altay has been President of Kinesis Magazine for two years, Treasurer of Cheese Grater twice and has now successfully been elected as Managing Editor for Kinesis Magazine.

Threading the Eye: A Crypt Gallery Exhibition - ERA Journal won Best Event. Era hosted an exhibition in the Crypt Gallery underneath the St. Pancras New Church in Euston. The event was massively successful, attended by over 300 people and showcasing pieces from over 31 student artists.

Vanessa Chan won The Best Contributor to the Arts. As Diversity and Inclusion Officer for UCL Drama Society, as well as the Executive Producer of Pride Festival, Vanessa has been a force behind ensuring the artsUCL community celebrates difference.

Societies

MedTech won the Opportunities Award for their commitment to forge career pathways in the industry, running conferences, workshops, and mentorship programmes. MedTech's members are truly working above and beyond to upskill students.

Artificial Intelligence Society- ClimateHack.AI won the award for Best Event. ClimateHack.AI brought together 20 global universities, with participants developing machine learning models to help tackle climate change. The best models from this year’s event were integrated into the National Grid.

The Departmental Society of the Year was won by The Engineering Society in recognition of the unique service ran by students, for students, that continues to support our volunteers and community as a whole.

Community

The Commitment to Coproduced Research Award was won by Maksida Sabackic in recognition of her research with Positive East, a HIV charity working to increase the uptake of HIV prevention measures by women of black African descent. 

The charity, Nightline won the Volunteering Organisation of the Year Award. The unique service ran by students, for students continues to support our volunteers and community as a whole.

Zero Food Waste won the Student Led Project of the Year Award. The longstanding project has been helping redistribute unsold food for more than six years, and this year worked with UCL East to distribute goods to charities in East London.
