Candidates

Zuha Malik (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

With a significant background in various volunteering roles, I've honed my skills in both organisation and communication, making me a resourceful and approachable candidate! A highlight of my experience was leading a team to support a charity aiding domestic abuse survivors. This initiative not only required careful planning but also demanded strong leadership  to ensure our team operated effectively and compassionately.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I aim to expand volunteering opportunities to suit a range of interests and schedules, making it easier for everyone to get involved; by introducing options for both short-term and ongoing commitments, I'll ensure that students can participate in meaningful activities that fit between classes or on free weekends. My goal is to streamline communication and keep everyone informed and engaged, so we’re all able to create this strong community where volunteering becomes a central part of our student experience!

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I am committed to making real improvements, not just discussing ideas. With my proven ability to lead and collaborate, combined with practical experience, I’ll strive to deliver results that enhance accessibility and enjoyment for everyone. I'm focused on ensuring all students can see and feel the benefits of their involvement.

Umesh Keraba Shinde
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As a first-generation student, I understand the challenges of accessing education. My experience as a student union leader has equipped me with essential advocacy and collaboration skills. I have worked with underprivileged first-gen students to help them secure admission to higher education abroad and top universities in India. If elected, I will build a strong community at UCL by promoting volunteer initiatives that tackle critical social issues, focusing on sustainability, and strengthening partnerships with external organizations. Together, we can empower every student to make a impact.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Create paid volunteering opportunities by partnering with NGOs and government agencies, enabling students to make a difference while earning and building career skills.
  • Launch animal welfare initiatives to promote awareness and protect animals through volunteering.
  • Introduce sustainability projects like "Green Guardians" to engage students in environmental efforts.
  • Support vulnerable communities with programs like "Mental Health Heroes" and "Tech Tutors."

Together, we can drive impactful change and strengthen our university community.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Vote for me to enhance UCL's community engagement for all students, regardless of their background.. I am dedicated to amplifying every student's voice and fostering a vibrant volunteering culture that is both impactful and rewarding. Together, we can create meaningful change, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to contribute and connect within our community. I believe that volunteering should not only benefit the community but also provide students with valuable skills and experiences that can enhance their career prospects.

Adam Shaw (he/him)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

In the previous academic year, I volunteered considerably in roles at both UCL-partnered organisations (over 120 hours) and other London-based charities in areas like migrant rights, mental health and education. Further, as a Project Leader at UCL Impact Initiative, I have an appreciation for the administration that facilitates UCL's volunteer programmes and an insight into various difficulties organisations encounter in volunteer recruitment. As such, I understand what it is like to volunteer as a UCL student and how some of these projects are run, which I believe will add value to this role.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

My principal aim would be to increase student engagement with UCL's volunteering service, with a particular emphasis on increasing both the accessibility and awareness of opportunities. To improve volunteer recruitment, I believe that advertising an inclusive, dynamic volunteering environment that offers personal and professional enrichment opportunities is vital; in this vein, I would be interested in looking into furthering the integration of volunteering programmes within UCL clubs and societies, as this could provide people with a more approachable route into the volunteering community.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I bring a passion for volunteering to the table, with experience in various roles at both UCL-partnered organisations and in the wider third sector. This alongside my existing understanding of how the Student's Union and Activities Zone operate (from being a Society President) will enable me to contribute various perspectives in important conversations. Overall, I would love this opportunity to help grow the UCL volunteering community and to represent and advocate for existing volunteers and their efforts to affect positive change.
