I have experience in student voice as an academic representative for Chemistry, serving as lead rep for my cohort this year and last. This, combined with an extended period working within the department as a Summer TA, has given me an in-depth knowledge of how the MAPS departments are run, as well as the ability to collaborate with a range of peers, from first-year undergraduates/prospective students to academic leadership staff to improve student experience. Highlights last year included better learning environments for in-person contact hours and greater transparency in marking for students.
My focus is on greater transparancy in assessment and marking of assessments for students to and making academic support more accessible. Due to the cohort sizes of many of the MAPS degrees, it can be difficult to know how to proceed if you are having difficulties. Better communication is needed between staff and students across the faculty in all areas to help students succeed but two that require more focus are assessments and academic support. Through working with the Teaching and Staff-Student committee's, I will work to create sustainable solutions to make this a reality for all students.
Put simply, I will do everything I can to make your time here the very best it can be. I will work tirelessly to promote student-centred feedback at a faculty level. In addition, have the expertise to succeed in this role from prior experience - I know how to communicate effectively at all levels, as well as work as a team member and a leader. My aim is that every faculty member gets as much learning and as many opportunities out of their time at UCL as possible, and in collaboration with the lead reps from the departments and members of academic staff, I will make that the focus of my role.
I bring a dynamic blend of skills and experiences, tailored for the MAPS UG rep role. Central to my ethos is the principle that every student's voice matters. As the founder of the M.O.P. programme, I spearheaded initiatives to instil core competencies among peers. My leadership extended as the MUN Chief Student Representative and took the helm as the School Leader for the European International Performing Arts competition. Leveraging this history of initiative and leadership, I'm committed to amplifying every MAPS student's voice and ensuring a collaborative academic environment.
If elected as the UG representative for MAPS, my aim is clear: foster a responsive, inclusive academic atmosphere. Drawing from my experiences, I'll prioritise open communication between students and faculty, ensuring immediate attention to concerns. Harnessing insights from my M.O.P. initiative, I'll promote collaborative academic endeavours, bridging curricular activities with essential soft skills. Ultimately, I envision a MAPS community where every student feels engaged, heard, and holistically prepared for the future.
Students should vote for me because I bring a proven track record of fostering collaboration and amplifying voices. With experiences from the M.O.P. program to diverse leadership roles, I understand the challenges you face and have actionable solutions. My commitment isn't just to represent, but to actively elevate your MAPS experience. By blending academic rigour with soft skill development, I promise a more adaptive, enriching journey for every student. Your vote ensures a proactive, responsive, and dedicated UG rep, championing your needs at every turn.
Greetings, dear students and staffs. I was the prefect of my high school (Yr12,13) and a student leader (Yr11) as well as being a class representative (Yr10), I am also the founder of the Physics Club thus i have a wide range of skills in terms of communicating between the staffs and the students and I am capable of administrating as a representative. I speak English Mandarin and Cantonese, and being an international student myself is beneficial when helping other international students. I am an extremely outgoing person and I really appreciate other’s ideas so feel free to say hi at anytime.
I wish to create a strong connection between the faculty and our students. This can be achieved by gathering the opinions and thoughts from both sides and make supportive actions towards them. I would also achieve to deliver any messages or updates promptly between our staffs and students. I will try my best to make our course study as interesting and as comfortable as possible, by making our entire cohort a welcoming and supportive community.
I am a very friendly and talkative person who loves to make friends as well as listening to other's ideas as I believe anyone's thought matters. I am also very curious in trying out new things, either by making reasonable adjustments that are beneficial, or by creating new and better solutions.Furthermore, I am an international student like some of us studying in this faculty, who has experience in studying aboard during my high school time in New Zealand, so I think my past experience could help both international students and domestic students. Thank you
In the past year, I have been active in my involvement in the university especially in the volunteering area. I have partaken an audit training and practice on UCL Green Impact in evaluating sustainability of faculties in UCL. I also have served a term in an NGO, based to combat education inequalities in Malaysia where I worked to assess impact of our programs among the beneficiaries. I was a team leader in one of the teams in SU language and cultural fair involving young primary school students, held in IoE. Last summer, I completed a 4-week internship program with a fund management company.
I find my course, BSc Economics and Statistics interesting - partly due to my course mates that has made it bearable with their companies and our common struggles. I would like to extend the support I have received the past year to students of interests and struggles alike. I feel there is still room for improvement when it comes to reaching out to students in the faculty for help academically. There should be more effort that goes into bridging the gap between the course mates within the faculty, socially. The faculty also should be more participating in UCL/ SU awards/ offered challenges.
I have taken few years in revising my skills and my core values. From then, I have become more clarified about my goals for the community around me. Apart from I have become more confident as a 2nd year student in UCL, I believe in my abilities in bringing changes to the students within this faculty. Especially as an international student, I resonate with a big portion of the students whom are more likely to feel disconnected from support. I would like to be a representative for friends alike through clear communication, simple yet significant changes and better connectivity among students.
I am Sophie-Jayne Bush, and in my 2nd year in the Science and Technology Studies Department,
- Last year I was elected Lead Department Rep and represented the undergraduate cohort.
- I was awarded the STS Alumni Prize for Outstanding Contributions, working to make as big an impact possible.
- Spent last year building the network needed to make change on a Faculty level. Attending Faculty meetings made me aware of issues to be addressed- your issues are my priority.
- I represented UCL to a panel of Russell Group Education leaders discussing the way AI should be used at university.
- The quality and lack of feedback across the faculty is disgraceful. University is about learning, not numbers on a page. I'll address the faculty directly to make feedback both in depth and punctual.
- AI exists- it's not going away and it needs integrating. It's a tool, not cheating as calculators were once seen.
- Lecture notes must be made available to students- there's no excuse. It's not normal for students to rely on alumni notes.
- UCL students are employable but we must be clued up. Our Careers network must work to be more accessible and useful for students.
Your quality of education, is my quality of education and I want it to be the best. We should be supported by the university- I will make this happen by advocating for the student voice.
Things must change and the only way forward is for reps to stand up and use the power in the roles they have been voted for. My experience has given me the greatest preparation and knowledge to take on this responsibility.
And quite frankly, I want to see changes happen and I trust myself to do so- you can too. We are not the only university facing these problems, but let's be the first to solve them.
