Hi, my name is Jonathan Davis and I am nominating myself to be your next Higher Education Volleyball Officer. I have played volleyball for just under 4 years, playing for my school volleyball team alongside the Macau Development Team. You will probably recognise me as the loud setter who is always at social sessions, where I have a lot of fun escaping from my studies of law as a first year student. I know that these sessions are an escape from stress for all of you guys as well, and seeing the amazing work that Ivan and Joe have done throughout the year made me want to continue these amazing sessions where a relaxed yet exciting atmosphere can help everyone, no matter your skill level, improve at volleyball.
Not long ago, I was a bright eyed 14 year old trying out volleyball for the first time, and I know how frustrating it is not being able to serve or spike. But I also know now how satisfying it is when you succeed at this sport. I want everybody to experience the joy of blocking someone, spiking straight to the ground or even perfectly receiving a serve. As your next HEVO, I will maintain the enjoyable and relaxing nature of these sessions while helping everybody improve their skills and perhaps even join social league teams!
For a fun year of volleyball next year, vote Jonathan Davis to be your HEVO!
Having been an active member of the society for the past two years, I have experienced first hand what makes our sessions enjoyable, inclusive and well run. I understand the balance needed between structure, competitiveness and fun and I’ve seen the impact that strong HEVOs have on engagement and longterm participation. This insight has given me a clear understanding of what makes a good HEVO and how to build on that foundation.
If elected, my priority would be to create welcoming and well-organised social sessions for both beginner and intermediate players. For beginners, this means supportive coaching and an environment where no one feels intimidated. For intermediate players, it means structured gameplay, opportunities to develop skills and sessions that remain challenging while still social. Alongside this, I would also look to improve the ticketing system to make sign ups more efficient and organised for all!
I would focus on consistency and communication: ensuring sessions start on time, equipment is organised and everyone knows what to expect each week. Creating these small improvements in structure can significantly enhance player experience and progression across ability levels. Most importantly, I want to foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels part of the society. By building on my two years of experience within the club, I am confident I can deliver engaging, organised and enjoyable sessions that strengthen both participation and community.
Hi everyone! I’m Maria, and I am running for HEVO because I want to share the joy and passion I have for volleyball with those already in the sport or anyone wanting to join in on the fun. When I started playing, I was lucky enough to find a community that welcomed me and made me fall in love with the sport. I want anyone who joins ucl volleyball to find that same refuge.
I have been playing volleyball for over 5 years now, so I’ve experienced both the social and competitive sides of it. I know some people just want to have fun with it and I hope to encourage that by maximising playing time (there’s never enough volleyball) and for anyone who’d maybe want to try playing at a higher level I’d try my best to help you reach that goal. Either way I'd always encourage feedback so that the sessions are what you want them to be!
Having previous experience in the organisation and running of volleyball events during my undergrad I believe that I can effectively provide a safe and positive environment that can make everyone feel welcome.
For those who don’t want to read that chunk of text I plan to:
- Build an inclusive and welcoming environment
- Maximise playing time
- Provide support for those who want to improve their skills
Thank you for considering me:)
