Dance Society: Vice President

I’m Yuma and I am running for Vice Pres! If you don’t know me already, I am a 2nd year BASc student and this year’s Scheduling Officer. My journey with dance started when I was 3, through a pre-professional track in Geneva to my now 2nd year in Dance Soc. I have been very lucky to be an active member in the society, as part of the competition team both years and dancing in Blooms. It has been so rewarding giving back to the society by helping run it and I would love the opportunity to do so again next year. 

Being on committee this year means I am aware and able to manage general committee duties: from getting to class duty with plenty of time to prep rooms to attending weekly meetings, you can count on me to be consistent! As VP, one of the responsibilities includes taking weekly meeting minutes. I am very punctual and will always show up to these meetings to take efficient minutes and highlight important tasks. If there’s one thing my time as Scheduling Officer has taught me, it’s the need to be organised and know what is going on when, so you can definitely count on me to plan class duty rotas and find solutions for times when people aren’t free. As VP I would also be in charge of co-producing 24h Show, the first one of the year! This show requires good problem solving skills and organisation given the time crunch, which is something I am ready to face. I hope to make the show as fun as possible and provide a welcoming environment for dancers to give it their all.

Over the past 2 years, Dance Soc has become a place where I’ve formed genuine friendships and feel comfortable being myself 🫂. I’ve been lucky to experience this society from different angles. As Freshers’ Rep in first year and Social Sec now, I’ve focused on welcoming new members and organising events that bring the community together. I’ve also choreographed for Freshers’ Show, Triple Bill, and this year’s Hip Hop comps team. Having spent so much time both performing and working behind the scenes on committee, I’ve worked closely with different committee positions and understand how the society runs. If you’ve seen my socials master spreadsheet, you’ll know I love a good spreadsheet - so organising the costume cupboard sounds pretty fun 🤞. Having co-produced 3 Dance Soc shows, and performed in 24 Hour Show in my first year, I feel comfortable taking on the challenge of producing the 24 Hour Show. Through my leadership responsibilities, I am organised and confident in problem-solving. My role has involved liaising with the SU and external partners, which has strengthened my communication and organisation skills. 

To me, VP is someone who understands how each role works and can help support the entire committee. Having been on committee for a year and a half now, I feel confident supporting other committee members, and helping projects run smoothly and continue to build the supportive community that makes Dance Soc so special 💌.
