Hi, my name is Aimilia and I'm a 2nd year Medical Innovation and Enterprise student. Innovation is at the heart of modern surgery and as someone passionate about medical and surgical entrepreneurship I am eager to contribute as the Innovation Chair for the Surgical Society. My experience as Education Officer for the Academic Surgical Society has given me valuable experience in organising academic events and engaging students in discussions about surgical advancements. Additionally, my participation in MedTech Society, as well as the content covered on my course, has provided me with a solid foundation on the intersection of technology and healthcare, which is crucial for driving surgical innovation. I have developed skills in organisation, critical thinking, communication, and initiative through my leadership roles, including Chief Editor of my high-school’s newspaper and lead of my high-school’s Medical Society. As a volunteer at UCLH, I have seen the impact innovation can have on patient care. As Innovation Chair, I aim to introduce interactive workshops guided by professionals in the field, industry-led discussions, and hands-on experiences that expose students to the latest developments in surgical techniques, robotics, and AI-driven procedures. By fostering a culture of curiosity and forward-thinking, I hope to apply my own experience in medical innovation and surgery to inspire the next generation of surgeons to embrace innovation as a cornerstone of their practice.

I would love to be Innovation Chair at UCL Surgical Society because I’m passionate about pushing the boundaries of surgical education and practise through the intersection of engineering and medicine. My research experience, which involves using engineering techniques to analyse aortic stress, has shown me how engineering principles are shaping the future of surgery—from developing advanced surgical tools to improving patient-specific treatment strategies. Innovation in surgery often comes from collaboration between engineers and clinicians, and I want to bring this mindset to the society.
If elected, I’d like to introduce hands-on workshops on emerging surgical technologies like robotics and AI-assisted surgery, create opportunities for students to engage with research, and foster collaborations that encourage innovative thinking in surgery.

I am excited to be running for Chair of the Surgical Innovation Society!
With a strong foundation in event organisation and society leadership, I have gained valuable experience as Finance Lead for the Plastic Surgery Society and Widening Participation Officer for iNUGSC 2024. These roles have equipped me with the skills to organise high-impact events, secure sponsorships, and drive student engagement; making me well-suited to lead and grow the society.
As Chair, I will:
- Start a ‘Surgical innovation’ conference in collaboration with other London universities: I will bring in renowned speakers and hands-on workshops to provide members with the latest insights regarding surgical innovation.
- Grow the Society & Engagement: with 100 followers on social media, I see huge potential for expansion. I will improve outreach, collaborate with other surgical societies, and increase engagement through social media.
- Launch a newsletter on the latest innovations in surgery: to keep members updated on the latest breakthroughs in surgical technology, research highlights, and upcoming events.
I am passionate about taking Surgical Innovation Society to the next level and would love your support!
