Kannan Maheswaran

I am excited to run for a position in the General Surgery committee to further contribute to surgical education, research and student engagement. As a fourth-year medical student with a deep passion for surgery, I am eager to take on a leadership role that fosters interest in general surgery and provides meaningful learning opportunities for students at all levels.
My involvement in surgical societies has given me valuable experience in organizing events and enhancing student engagement. As Events Director of the General Surgery committee, I have collaborated with Academic Surgery to establish a journal club, creating a platform for students to critically analyse key surgical literature. Additionally, as an Education Officer for UCL Surgical Society, I have developed and delivered tutorials to support pre-clinical students, helping them strengthen their understanding of medical concepts. These experiences have refined my ability to facilitate surgical learning in an interactive and accessible manner.
Beyond education, I have actively pursued surgical research, an audit and systematic review which could help me influence surgical decision-making. If elected, I will work to expand surgical teaching initiatives, organise hands-on tutorials, and strengthen mentorship programs within the society. I am committed to making the General Surgery committee an inclusive, supportive space where students can explore their passion for surgery and develop essential clinical skills.
