Hi Everyone!
I'm Tom, a 3rd-year Surgical Sciences student, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the role of Cardiothoracic (CT) Chair. Over the past two years, I have been an active member of the CT subcommittee, gaining invaluable experience and insights into how we can deliver exceptional content and opportunities for our members. My involvement in wider CT activities, such as the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (SCTS), and my collaborations with surgeons at George’s and other London hospitals, have equipped me with the knowledge and connections to take this role to the next level.
This year, I have delivered the most attended in-person and online talks, demonstrating my commitment to engaging and inspiring our members. Building on this momentum, I have a clear vision for the future of the CT subcommittee, focused on education, inclusivity, and national impact.
My Goals?
- Enhancing Theatre Experience and Surgical Connections
- Focused and Contextual Education
- Increased Inclusivity
- Establishing a CT Presence at Conferences
Vote Tom for Cardiothoracic Chair!

I am excited to apply for the role of Cardiothoracic Chair! This past year, serving as Events Officer on the main committee has given me invaluable coordination skills and insight into how the Student Union operates. Alongside this, being part of the Cardiology Subcommittee has strengthened my understanding of this dynamic specialty and working as a team to facilitate engaging events for all years.
Beyond SurgSoc, I am in my third year as a volunteer at St Bart's Hospital, where I’ve built strong connections with pioneering surgeons. I want to use these links to build upon the work of the last committee:
- This year there is definitely scope to organise an Independent UCL 'Cardio' Conference by working alongside Cardiology Society. This excellent partnership with other subcommittees can increase visibility and diversify participation in this fantastic field.
- I also envisage plenty of Wet Lab Simulations and the introduction of new (more anatomically correct) suture kit following the recent development of 3D Printed technology. Remembering the skill-based demands of this speciality is important to delivering high-quality insights into what the vocation is really like.
- Mentorship and guidance is equally important. Organising regular opportunities for members to socialise with surgeons and researchers can help broaden their perspectives.
Cardiothoracics is all about precision, innovation, and momentum: qualities I’m ready to bring to this team...
