My first ever lead role in Stage Crew was on an external last year, where I was the LD on A Yorkshire Tragedy, and it was, well, a tragedy. Despite the lack of lights on the first night, it made for one of the best learning experiences I could have for lighting, and was a huge step into the world of lighting design for me. Since then, externals filled up my free time, on weekends or random weeknights, in the IOE or Mully's, and it's something I find nothing can really compare to. Bonding with the rest of the crew while we try to lug 5 flight cases from the Range to the IOE, or having to set up and program a whole show in a day (or sometimes just 3 hours) are the short bursts of stress, fun and satisfaction that have really spiced up my uni life so far.
Having crewed a total of 32 shows so far, I'm familiar with the equipment and processes to aid and/or crew any show, and knowing some of the previous Externals Officers, I understand the role and the challenges that come with it, and I would be honoured to take them on and keep the externals running. Through producing MNight 2025 this year, I've learnt I enjoy doing admin and management work, but it's also taken up so much of my time that I haven't been able to do as many shows with Stage Crew this year as I would have liked to. Taking on the role of Externals Officer would allow me to fully get back into my love for externals and hopefully give others the same experience and joy I found through externals.
