the Salsa society has been the most rewarding community i’ve ever been a part of and I fervently want to play my part in continuing its greatness. In my two years in the society i have constantly taken part in Lessons and have been part of both the Rueda and Bachata teams. From these experiences I have come to understand a few of the aspects which make salsa society special: The importance of a friendly face, the path of dancing progression and the joy of trying new things. As president I would aim to follow in the footsteps of Martha and cultivate these aspects through three respective practises:
- Emphasize above all how welcome Salsa Society is to beginners by offering new opportunities for absolute beginners to take part, whether that be taster sessions or events like the leading and following salsa workshop.
- Encouragement for members of the society to develop their skills, whether that be as part of our choreography teams or by going to socials. I particularly found social dancing terrifying, but because of this i know how important support from friends in the society can be in encouraging you to have lots of fun.
- Perhaps some of the best times in the society have been at events where we learn different Latin dances or collaborated with other societies. Whether that be dropping it low at a reggaeton event or attempting to dance fast enough to match the live music at the jazz fiesta, it's these kinds of events which form special memories and which i would pursue organizing.
