International Relations Society: Welfare Officer

I am standing as a passionate committee member and first year rep. I feel my experiences have allowed me to interact with many fellow members and best their perspectives as passionate and curious people. I would support actions like expanding events to allow for further interpersonal engagement, both academic and social, and inter-society collaboration as I feel these directions would allow members to find belonging and deepen their sense of community.

I believe that togetherness and respectful curiosity are values that the society has exemplified in its events and influence. Its openness to UCL’s global community is essential for wellbeing. I have thoroughly enjoyed my current experience as a first year rep, which provided me with insight into not only organising events but also the interpersonal interactions between committee and society members. These experiences, including my role as the organiser and film programmer for the ongoing IR Society Film Festival, have made me more sensitive to the perspectives and possible preferences or welfare experiences of people. I remain committed to ensuring that everyone feels welcome as a member of both the society itself and the UCL community (which I believe societies help to solidify). We may subconsciously develop our consideration of people’s welfare. But being actively and openly committed is its own effort, one I feel I can confidently fulfil given my experience interacting with society members.
