Hey everyone,

From the moment I joined UCL WHC, I was made to feel so welcome by everyone, and that is something I want to prioritise for all of the new freshers next year.

At the start of this year, I thought that I should stick to defence, where I felt most comfortable. But a couple of weeks in, I was encouraged to try an attacking position. Even though I do not have the best reputation for scoring goals, my confidence and love for hockey has grown more than I ever expected and I am very grateful for this. If I am captain next year I want to bring that same encouragement and support to everyone on the team and make everyone feel enthusiastic and confident to try something that may be outside of their comfort zone just as I did this year. Aside from this, I would also give strong encouragement for attendance at training and also bring back 3s fitness on a Thursday next year.

I cant forget that Wednesdays are not just about the hockey but also about the socials and its what makes the 3s more than just a team. I have really enjoyed all the Wednesday socials this year and I find myself always looking forward to a Wednesday. Next year I will ensure that Wednesdays remain the day everyone looks forward to, strengthening our bond as a collective.

Thank you for listening

Charlotte Conway

Playing club hockey previously, at uni I thought of trying something new. But after some convincing I arrived at UCL with my kit and nervously joined try-outs. Although initially hesitant, joining this exciting and warm community has been a highlight of my university experience, helping me grow as a player and a person, so I would be honoured to be captain of my team – the 3s.

Through playing I have developed a strategic understanding of the game, often contributing my thoughts at half-time; although primarily a defender, I have adapted to play in other positions where needed; and I am a motivational team member. Just as importantly, I have showed club commitment by attending socials and events aplenty with so much passion that I landed myself the title of 3s loser.

As captain I would put emphasis into practicing personal skills and implementing these into a cohesive team gameplay. Maintaining 3s fitness on a day during the week will strengthen team bonds and allow training time to be centred on stick and ball. I will also be a listening ear to anyone in the club who needs it. I am so excited to welcome a new set of freshers to bash and play in a season that is sure to be memorable!!
