Women’s Hockey is an exciting, inclusive club that is always looking for new members! If you’ve played at school, at an international level, or never before, come along and get involved. It’s a great way to make new friends. Our committee is passionate about the value of team sports as part of your university experience. We promote sports as an important component of physical and mental health, and the club is a ready-made support system as you make the transition to university.
We offer something almost every day of the week if you want to take part, which is a big reason why we were nominated for "Club of the year" at the TeamUCL Sports Awards for the 2023/2024 academic year! So the club is what you make of it! All members train on a Monday, with additional training available on a Thursday for the 1st XI and anyone keen. We play matches throughout the week and throughout the year. We compete in BUCS (British University College Sport) on Wednesdays and in LUSL (London University Sports League) on Sundays. In the LUSL Women's league, we put forward a mixed-ability team incorporating members of all 4 teams to give everyone the chance to play together and get to know each other! We also take part in LUSL mixed League with the Men’s club, with whom we have a close partnership. Both sets of matches are always followed by a social, frequently featuring the famous roasted potatoes at the Leyton Star! We are also closely tied to our alumni club, the London Academicals, with whom we organise a really fun day of matches at the end of the academic year, known as Mandy Walker.
Our social secretaries take charge on a Wednesday evening, with themed club socials every week (dress up recommended). We celebrate big events with the UCL Men's Hockey Club throughout the year; including our annual Christmas Ball, Varsity and Summer Tour. We also host welfare, fitness and volunteering events weekly to interest all members, in addition to career events with our sponsors and fascinating talks by external speakers. For instance, in February 2024 Susannah Townsend MBE delivered a fascinating talk about what it was like playing for Team GB and her experience as an LGBT+ athlete. UCLWHC is a big and vibrant community we would love everyone to be a part of.
We have an impressive volunteering record, evident in the fact that we were nominated for "Volunteering Sports Club of the Year" 2023/2024! We have supported various charities in the past, including Olly's Future, Coppafeel, and many more by organising pub quizzes, socials, food drives, etc! Our two biggest and most notable charity events of 2024 include a charity hockey match we organised alongside RUMS Hockey to support the Grace O'Malley-Kumar Foundation, raising £548, and our participation in the "30 miles in April Challenge" in support of Mind, which raised £951! We also provide the opportunity to volunteer with Hockey Inner City on Friday evenings. Hockey Inner City is a South London-based charity which strives to make hockey accessible and fun for children between the ages of 7-13. We contribute by assisting with their training sessions and sharing hockey advice, as well as sharing our experiences of university and careers!
