I believe that my organisation skills, dedication, and enthusiasm makes me best suited for the role of general secretary of the Geographical society.  I volunteered at my local library as an administrator during the summer school holidays advising parents and children on the library activities and the Summer Reading Challenge. I interned at Wiley Edge an outfit of Wiley, where I did admin work and also helped organise staff meetings. As general secretary I will ensure better communication between the department and prospective students during offer holder days and other events. I believe the society can benefit from my natural ability to connect with both parents and prospective offer holders to motivate them to chose UCL geography and enrol into the Geographical society. As well as being able to be on top of any admin challenges thrown at me, as the general secretary, I will strive to ensure that all meetings are effectively organised and transparent with members to get the most out of their membership. I look forward to working well with the rest of the committee during my term as general secretary to guarantee a successful year for the Geographical society.

Jess Claridge Law

Hellooo! I’m Jess and I’m currently studying BA Geography! I would love to act as general secretary for the Geographical Society as I would love to represent everyone in the Geography department and outside!

As general secretary I would love to represent our society by working on admin, and liaising with the Geography department on open days, and outreach events. These events are particularly important to me because there are so many underrepresented groups within UCL; whether this being socioeconomically, or those who have disabilities. I want to make sure everyone is equally represented.

  • A key idea is to create a scheme for students eligible for widening participation- this would include online webinars and seminars to prospective students who may not have considered London for university; whether this be due to costs or other barriers. These webinars would help with confidence, money management skills and also academic support.
  • More outreach to underrepresented communities, encouraging more students to come to London. As a student from the Isle of Wight, there’s a lack of outreach schemes and therefore I would like to encourage more programmes in rural and remote areas!

Overall, education and encouraging more local students and those in underrepresented areas is incredibly important to me! I would be delighted to represent GeogSoc as your general secretary, and to be working with the rest of the Geogsoc committee! Please vote if you’d like me to represent you! :)

Patricia Hao

Since joining UCL, I've always had fun participating in GeogSoc activities as it's a great place to meet coursemates and new friends. This has inspired me to join the committee since I'll have the opportunity to help others navigate their journey into university. In high school, I led several extracurricular activities which have not only allowed me to become an effective communicator, but also someone who's able to successfully organise events. I'm also highly responsible and will be able to balance academic work with the role of General Secretary, assuring that all the admin work is complete and that communication with the Department and offer holders goes smoothly. Overall, I'd be thrilled to be a part of a committee that has helped me adjust to life in university and it's an exciting opportunity to connect with others interested in geography.
