Dear Members of the Genetics Society,
I am thrilled to apply for the position of Vice President. As a first-year Neuroscience student at UCL and an international student from North Macedonia, I am deeply passionate about genetics and its potential to transform our understanding of life and health.
Since joining the Genetics Society, I have actively participated in events like academic talks and the Li Lab visit at the Francis Crick Institute, which have inspired me to contribute more actively. Balancing university responsibilities with a part-time job has honed my time management, organizational skills, and ability to thrive under pressure—qualities essential for this role.
My academic background includes an EPQ on Alzheimer’s Disease, where I explored its genetic causes and current research, developing strong research and communication skills. As a Boarding School Prefect and Academic Prefect, I organized events, resolved conflicts, and mentored younger students, fostering inclusive and supportive environments. My work as a Healthcare Assistant at Duchy Hospital further highlighted the importance of genetics in healthcare.
If elected, I will expand educational opportunities, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and increase outreach to make genetics accessible to all. I am committed to enhancing the society’s impact and creating a welcoming community for everyone.
Thank you for your consideration. I would be honored to serve as VP and contribute to this incredible society.

Hello, my name is Sarah and I am a second year Biology student on the Genetics stream. As the current Social Media Officer, I am actively involved in all aspects of the Genetics Society, from academic talks and lab visits to blog posts, making sure that important information and announcements reach our members and a wider audience in a clear and timely manner. This role has allowed me to utilise my communication and organisation skills by working closely with every committee member to discuss the events that they are organising and effectively delivering this information to our lovely members. I am confident in saying that I know the structure of GenSoc and the nature of our events very well.
If elected as Vice President next year, I will continue collaborating closely with both committee and society members to organise events including internship panel, monthly academic talks, lab visits, bi-weekly journal club meetings, annual conference (starting this year!) and social events.
I will assist the President in contacting speakers, liaising with venues and communicating with other committee members. Another area I aim to focus on is to actively encourage input and ideas from our members by posting regular feedback and suggestion forms to create a welcoming community where everyone feels heard and valued.
Thank you for reading this far and feel free to contact me at sarah.gu.23@ucl.ac.uk if you have any questions!
