Andrew Keenlyside

I have been your vice-president for the last year. In that time, I have met many fantastic students and alumni, who help keep this club running and make it an incredibly fun and accepting place to fence at any level.

I am running once more for my current role, to help support a fresh committee and let this century-old club continue to evolve and improve.

A bit about me: I have been fencing for around 3 years now, mostly sabre and foil, and I found that the UCL fencing club was the place where I built some of my strongest and closest friendships. One of my main skills is that I am a calm, and well reasoned person who can resolve disagreement and help advocate for fencers to the SU.

I am a PhD student in the department of mechanical engineering, doing research in a break from medical school. I have served in various committee positions within academic and sports societies at the University of Dundee prior to moving to London and also understand the function of the UCL fencing committee to help bring some stability and continuity as we change committee.

As I am required to travel as part of my work I will not put myself forward for a constitutional role (pres., treasurer, ect.) to ensure members can access these committee members at all times. However, I hope you will allow me to help support the club, our new president, and all you amazing people who make the club what it is.

Fencing has been a part of my life since I was eight years old, but joining UCL Fencing—one of the first and most welcoming communities I found after moving to London—exposed me to so much more than I ever expected. It introduced me to épée for the first time after having always fenced foil, took me to parts of the UK I never thought I’d visit through BUCS competitions with the Women's I Team, and, most importantly, reshaped my perspective on fencing as a team sport rather than just an individual pursuit. This club has given me incredible experiences and friendships, and over the past year as Social Secretary, I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to give back. I’ve worked to strengthen our sense of camaraderie, organizing everything from pub meetups and movie nights to classic Sports Night socials. Beyond that, I’ve supported my fellow committee members—publicizing and documenting their events, helping introduce the new Social Media Representative role, and ensuring that member feedback is always heard and valued. As Vice President, I want to continue this work—building on the strong, inclusive community we’ve fostered while providing support to both the committee and club members. With my experience navigating the Students' Union’s administrative side and the relationships I’ve built within the club, I believe I can help ensure that UCL Fencing remains an engaging, accessible, and thriving space for everyone.

Foujia Anjum Abdus Begum

Hi,

I'm running to be VP because I want to create an actual community amongst the UCL fencers. Currently, there's many of us, spread out and not really involved in as many social events or opportunities to actually make friends with other fencers, off the piste.

So, I present myself to be your next VP, to create a more connected fencing club that takes part frequest and varying socials, themed fundraisers, fun demonstrations, and much more. I may not be the best fencer, but I know how to build a lasting community.
