The core of Engineering Without Borders society is humanitarian engineering—exactly why I chose to study mechanical engineering and why I'd be a strong candidate for EWB President. In 2020, I came across an NGO providing free prosthetic hands to the underprivileged in India, inspiring me to design and make a working prosthetic hand for a student in my school who was missing a limb. Through this iterative design process, I realised my passion for engineering with impact. Moreover, through the EWB Design Challenge 2025, I helped conceptualize a Local Enterprise Hub from a refurbished cinema in Scotland, including contributing with ideas on sustainability—using renewable energy, locally sourced materials, and a 'plant wall.' I felt extremely welcome in the society and loved the community feeling - as President, I would build on this community.
Next year, I'd introduce weekly socials to discuss humanitarian innovations and collaborate with societies like Engineers In Action or Project Impactive. As a STEM ambassador for two years, I'd also organize monthly school visits for engineering workshops—helping increase diverse role models for younger generations.
With a proven track record in leadership—including running engineering society in sixth form, leading my team to win the Imperial innovation competition 2024, and being one of three students worldwide to receive an Institute of Mechanical Engineers scholarship—I am committed to making EWB a hub for innovation and collaboration.
Hi everyone, I’m Gaby! You might remember me as last year’s Activities Coordinator, and this year, I’m excited to take the next step—running for President of the EWB Society. First, I want to send my best wishes to our graduating upperclassmen, I hope to carry forward their legacy and build upon it.
As a Masters of Engineering for Sustainable Built Environment, Energy and Resources student, I’m deeply inspired by the power of thoughtful engineering to serve communities. EWB has been an incredible space for me to channel this passion, and I’d love the opportunity to refine and expand our society. If elected, I plan to introduce more activities and socials, improve the EWB Challenge, and create a more organized, engaging experience for all members. Some ideas include organizing volunteer work for engineering causes, as well as fundraising — like bake sales or other creative initiatives we can develop together. I want to foster an open discussion within the group, encouraging collaboration and fresh ideas. Additionally, I’d love to organize more socials and engineering-themed pub quizzes to create stronger connections within our community.
I’d love your support—let’s make EWB even better together!
