Hi, I’m Esther, and I’m running to your next Convenor!
Running great competitions is essential—it’s how we fund the society, build our reputation, create fun debate spaces, and give novices a shot at competing on home turf. I know how much precision it takes to get every moving part working smoothly, and I’m ready to take on the challenge. I believe I have the strong organisational track record and collaborative communication skills needed to run successful competitions.
Here’s why you should vote for me:
- Strong organisational experience – I’ve run national trials, coordinated workshops, and handled logistics for large-scale debate events.
- Extensive debate contacts – I have connections with UCL alumni and debaters across the UK (KCL, Imperial, LSE, and beyond), making it easier to secure CAs, IAs, and top judges.
- Competition experience – I’ve attended many tournaments, so I know what makes a comp run well—and what doesn’t. From getting CAs, IAs, and judges to handling sign-ups and finances, I have the skills to make our competitions a success.
I’d love to help make UCL’s competitions bigger, better, and more seamless. Vote Esther for Convenor!

Currently, novice debaters simply do not have enough incentive to participate other than their love of debate. As convenor, my goal will be to organise smaller, more focused tournaments in addition to Pres. Cup and UCL IV. My goals with these extra competitions is to prepare less experienced debaters for more serious competition while simultaneously boosting the quality of the Thursday sessions. More than that, it is my hope that with these sessions, the novice debaters of UCL who join at the start of each new year will actually stick around because they are able to both compete while remaining in a less intense environment. However, as a convenor I will not solely focus on novices. UCL's more experienced debaters need to go up against the best of the best. It is my hope that for the more advanced speakers, online competitions organised by UCL will allow them to "stay in shape" so to speak, increasing their sharpness so that UCL as a whole can put their best foot forward at larger competitions. If all this sounds like what UCL debate is lacking, then vote Cassius for Convenor.

I am new to debate this year and have never partook in anything of the sort at school, so this is entirely new to me. I will never claim to be the best debater (in fact, I am pretty sure I am one of the worst!). Yet, in the past few months, debate has become a huge part of my life; aside from having attended pretty much every competition I could've this term, I also flew across the world to attend comps over Christmas. I joined this society to build my self-confidence and public speaking, but I never expected it to take over my life the way it did. Our committee needs cohesion, communication and a shared vision next year. I have the skills and connections to work with everyone on the committee to make all aspects of the comps our best yet (e.g. socials, lunches, budgeting, etc.).
- only first-year with convening experience
- convened UCL Pro-Am
- will learn to tab so can manage in-house
- two Gold Finals breaks as Judge
- judged at World Championships
Away from the competitive side, I can honestly say the most important part of debate for me is the people who have become some of my closest friends at uni in the last few months. From twelve-hour bus journeys across new countries to an Airbnb that is actually somebody's garden shed, my uni experience has been forever changed by the amazing people in this society. This is my main reason for running; I want so desperately to give back and improve the society for the people who have made my move to London a million times easier.
Vote Alice!

Hi Everyone! My name is Kanva, and I am running to be your convenor of the Debate Society for the upcoming year!
As someone who has been debating since high school, I could not have found a better chance for me to contribute to the activity that played a huge role in building my confidence and I hope as your convenor I can play my part in ensuring debate is as fulfilling for you as it was for me!
Before we go any further, a little bit about myself :
- I am a first year law student at UCL
- I had the opportunity to be part of one of the UCL teams sent to the Oxford Intervarsity in October 2024
- In highschool I had the chance to represent India at international debating competitions by being selected to join their national debate team
- I played a major role in the training of novices in my high school and also played a key role in the organisation of an intra-national debate tournament at my school while subsequently adjudicating at said tournament
What do I hope to achieve as convenor :
- Boost first year participation in the tournaments to be held
- Despite having done debate before, I found that joining such a large society can be a bit daunting at first and it’s only later went on to find out how welcoming everyone else was and so I want to prevent that hesitation that people might have, like myself, in joining such tournaments
- Active outreach to ensure broader participation in said tournaments
- Stronger coordination and robust communication to ensure a smooth sailing tournament
