Hello hello! I'm Sam and I'm currently one of your social secs - a position which has allowed me to truly appreciate the importance of a supportive community.
As we can probably all agree, the boat club makes up a large portion of our lives at university so it's important we feel safe and happy. Also, success within each squad is undeniably intertwined with our capacity to support and understand one another. Therefore, it is incredibly important that we take care of our individual and group well-being. I believe this can be achieved through weekly welfare lunches, club engagement with mental health awareness week and other events, and the constant promotion of accessible support systems.
Having worked in high stress environments, where misunderstandings are common, I've gained conflicts resolution skills. Also, due to the high stress nature of university I believe it is important to have support systems in place for when a member of our boat club is feeling overwhelmed. Furthermore, being an active member of 2 sports societies has allowed me to see first-hand what works and what does not when trying to maintain a positive atmosphere. Ultimately and most importantly, I think that I'm most suited to this role because I care about the people in this boat club. While I hope that I was able to provide you with a smile as my time as social sec, I believe I can truly make a difference as your welfare officer.
Till next time, take care!

I am standing for welfare officer as I have really enjoyed my novice year with the boat club (despite the storms) and I would love to help make sure everyone staying with uclbc and all new members have just as good of a time next year. I would love for rowing to reach as many people as possible and I will continue to make sure uclbc is an inclusive club where everyone’s voices can be heard. I hope to be someone who you feel you can come to with any issues around the club or ofc not-rowing-stuff, I love a chat. This role is important to me as someone who knows how incredible sports can be for our mental health that I want to make sure we are all comfortable speaking about our own health. Not only should you be able to chat to me but I would like to introduce more welfare activities - yoga? coffee mornings?? - so we can all benefit from a stretch but also get to know all crews as well as being a welcoming crowd. I hope to be able to serve you well and at the end of the day happy healthy rowers are speedy rowers <3
