Abhiraj Dhillon

I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for President of UCL’s Bhangra Society.

My passion for bhangra has inspired me to step forward and lead our society into a new era of growth, inclusivity, and excellence. My journey from having no experience in dancing to becoming an FYR and competing at The Bhangra Showdown has deepened my love for Bhangra and our society’s vibrant culture. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to Bhangra, and as President, I want to ensure our society continues to thrive as a vibrant hub of cultural expression at UCL.

If elected, I will make decisions that reflect our collective interests, ensure transparency in society finances and operations, and work tirelessly to create opportunities for every member to grow and shine. From more collaborations with other societies and beginner-friendly classes to an increase in social events, I want to build a space where members can learn, express themselves, and form lifelong friendships, all while celebrating the energy and spirit of Bhangra.

With my leadership, enthusiasm, and vision, I will strive to make the coming year unforgettable for all members. If you share my passion and want to see our society reach new heights, I would love your support!

Sonia Marwaha

Hi everyone! My name is Sonia and I'm standing for president of UCL Bhangra Society.

I cannot express in words how much this society and the people in it mean to me.

From my newfound friendships to brilliant memories of classes and socials, I've achieved more than I could've imagined - on and off stage. Bhangra is truly where art, athleticism and teamwork converge, and I would be honoured to represent us in another new year of progress.

I hold leadership and administrative experience as a former elected member of the Youth Parliament, and look forward to working with a team. As I hold no duties in other societies, I can dedicate my time to help this society blossom.

As president, I would focus on:

  • Prioritising a safe and inclusive environment
  • Consistent sessions of all levels for all members
  • Opportunities to perform Bhangra outside of Rangeela and TBS eg charity events, teaching workshops
  • Collabs with other dance societies for some intercultural exchanges!
  • A more structured and diverse social calendar
  • Streamlining communication within the society, so members can get to know the committee and seek support more easily

My ultimate goal as president is to make you feel like you belong here. I went to my first taster as a fresher who was too embarrassed to speak Punjabi in front of her friends, but Bhangra Society transformed my relationship to this incredible culture. I want to pass this experience on and showcase not just Bhangra, but our unity and passion.

Thank you for considering me!

Nikita Suye

Hi, I am Nikita and I would love to be your next UCL Bhangra President!

The first reason I think I will be a good fit for the role is because I have grown such a passion for bhangra. I have danced since I was tiny but I can honestly say bhangra has been my favourite style by far. When i was going through things personally at the start of the year bhangra was one of the only things that would cheer me up every time guaranteed. I would love to be part of the reason that when new dancers join us next year, they feel uplifted and grow to share that same spark for bhangra which our whole society shares. I want to create a positive space where anyone is welcome and everyone is encouraged.

I also have experience choreographing and teaching dance to class sizes of over 30 individuals which I did weekly for over a year. This means I have been trained in teaching choreography making me confident in that aspect. This job also included motivating students, setting formations, building a team, preparing for shows and just generally having a vision for a dance in my head and executing it seamlessly.

I am not blind to the fact this is going to be a lot of work. My choice to apply ultimately came down to the fact that the thought of learning new bhangra moves, learning more about bhangra and being committed to this role isn’t just something I am willing to do but is something I really want to do. This is a challenge I would love to take on and I promise to put my all into.

Nayanika V Khanna

Bhangra has been such a huge part of my first year at UCL, and being president means I'll be able to give back so much to the society which is now like family to me.

As president, my goal would be to foster a sense of community and belonging. I believe dance connects people in a more unique and deeper way than any other hobby. Whether it be conducting more open sessions, bringing in experienced Bhangra dancers for workshops, I want to make UCL Bhangra a society for everyone.

Uni is an uncertain time for everyone and I want to make the society a safe space, help people who are shy or apprehensive come out of their shell and help them shine, just like the society and Rangeela helped me.

I've been the head of a team while working with an NGO in India, and have planned many events for the organisation.

I may only have a year of experience with Bhangra, but I strongly resonate with the society and would like to give the next set of members the same experience (if not better) I've had.

Thank you!
